Wear to Where #2 . . . . . . Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge
Thursday, December 11th, 2014
By Clarke Condé
Next in the Wear to Where series, we look to the Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge. For years this span of 180 feet has been less of a unifier than a divider in this community, but Senator Chuck Schumer has an idea (or rather wants someone to come up with an idea) that could change that permanently…

Wear to Where #1 . . . . . . The Inner Loop
Sunday, November 30th, 2014
By Clarke Condé
Welcome to the first in a new series blending geography and fashion with a focus on this place we call Rochester. We are fortunate to have host of boutiques and makers that bring a homegrown sense of Rust Belt chic to the varied spaces here. This series is an exploration of those spaces, many of which would otherwise not even get a second glance…

Bus Stop Cubes Could Give Transit Riders in Rochester a Place to Rest
Sunday, November 23rd, 2014Have you ever noticed someone standing on the side a busy road or sitting on the curb while waiting for a bus? The lack of seating at bus stops in our area is a real problem, especially for seniors and people with disabilities. This week however, Reconnect Rochester unveiled a clever solution which they believe could change this picture…

Filling In: Charlotte Street
Thursday, November 13th, 2014It’s kind of amazing we haven’t looked at Charlotte Street already, but better late than never. Also, the RFP from the city is out, so there’s that. You can read the details here
. Let’s just say the city is much more open minded about this proposal than the one for Midtown Parcel 5.
This proposal, in case you’re curious, is due December 5th. It’s going to be a busy few weeks for you if you’re trying to submit for this and Site 5…

Thievin’ Stephen Street Art to Benefit Non-profit, Reconnect Rochester
Sunday, November 9th, 2014You may recall waaay back in 2010 a group of RocSubway readers got together with the intent of drumming up support for transportation alternatives in Rochester. In a town where the car is king, that was to be no easy task. But we’ve been making measurable progress. Find out how you can help, AND get some original Thievin’ Stephen artwork as a thank-you…

Amazing! Virtual Tour of Rochester Subway on Google Street View
Friday, November 7th, 2014Okay urban explorers and subway fans, lay down some newspaper and get ready to have your minds blown. A local photographer, Mark Goho, has made it his mission to capture 360º panoramas of Rochester parks to share with the world on Google Views. Mark’s latest project took him deep underground and, with a few clicks of a camera and mouse, he has given the general public unfettered access into the abandoned Rochester subway…

Historic Cunningham Carriage Returns to Rochester
Monday, October 6th, 2014
The following post by Amy Cavalier was originally published at DePaul.org.
Thousands of miles, several movie appearances and more than 140 years after leaving the Cunningham Carriage Factory on Litchfield Street in Rochester NY, a late-19th century brougham-style carriage returned home on Tuesday, September 30…

A Beautiful Day for a Change
Friday, September 26th, 2014I’m generally a pretty happy person, but this time of year I’ve noticed my spirit has a tendency to drop a few pegs. Probably has something to do with the shorter days or whatever. Who knows. Anyway, it occurs to me that I’m not alone. There are LOTS of unhappy people out there. If you drive on the highways and byways of greater Rochester, you’ll get to meet many of them.
This week I foolishly let myself get drawn into not one, but two ugly squabbles. The first was with a driver who sped up to catch me from behind (in the right lane mind you) and then refused to let me merge when our two lanes became one. So, like a bozo, I whaled on my horn for a while and shook my fist in the air at the guy to make sure he saw me in his rear view mirror…

Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism
Monday, September 15th, 2014On Monday, September 29, Reconnect Rochester will host a discussion with author and transit advocate Benjamin Ross. Mr. Ross will be at the Public Library on Monroe Ave. at 6:30 p.m. to talk about his new book, Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism.
Ross was the head of Maryland’s Action Committee for Transit during much of its long fight to build a light rail line outside Washington, D.C. After a 25-year battle, the Purple Line will begin construction next year…

Reimagining Rochester’s Underground
Sunday, August 31st, 2014
The abandoned subway tunnel beneath Rochester’s Broad Street has become one of the most popular sites for students of architecture and design to test their creative chops. You may remember the ROC Low Line; an underground park designed by a team of RIT students. Soon after that we reviewed a more serious plan to install an underground shopping mall and entertainment venue called Broad Street Underground.
Yet another thought-provoking concept and set of renderings have been shared with us. This one elaborates on the idea of using the interior space as a nightclub, with various (wet and wild) public spaces…

The Bath House at Durand Eastman Beach
Wednesday, July 30th, 2014
Durand Eastman Park has long been a popular recreational destination for Rochesterians. Last year while digging into the legend of the Lady in White I came across some old photos of the park’s construction, as well as some interesting old structures. The stone foundation of the old refectory is still there (often mistaken for a fort or castle ruins). But there was another interesting feature of the park which has long vanished. The bath house…
