Okay urban explorers and subway fans, lay down some newspaper and get ready to have your minds blown. A local photographer, Mark Goho, has made it his mission to capture 360º panoramas of Rochester parks to share with the world on Google Views. Mark’s latest project took him deep underground and, with a few clicks of a camera and mouse, he has given the general public unfettered access into the abandoned Rochester subway…
To start exploring, use the viewer below. Or better yet, launch the fullscreen experience .
Professionally, Mark works with Google to do something called Google Business View which is a lot like the more familiar Street View but inside businesses.
“I’ve been doing it for two years now,” Mark tells RocSubway via a Facebook message. “I started doing the parks back in 2012, and the virtual tours this Spring.”
For you shutterbugs, Mark uses a Canon 70D with Sigma 8mm lens. To stitch the panoramas together he uses PTGui . In this instance he also used a special photographic process known as High Dynamic Range (HDR)
to capture amazing detail in extreme light conditions. If you were to physically venture into the tunnel, beyond the aqueduct bridge it’s so dark you’d need normally flood lights to see with this level of clarity.
And what’s more amazing is that this virtual tour is only partially complete. Mark is still working to compile shots and will be adding more in the near future – so be sure to check back soon.
Hat’s off to you, Mark!
