Amazing! Virtual Tour of Rochester Subway on Google Street View

November 7th, 2014

A local photographer has begun capturing the abandoned Rochester subway for viewing on Google Street View. [PHOTO: Mark Goho]
By Mike Governale

Okay urban explorers and subway fans, lay down some newspaper and get ready to have your minds blown. A local photographer, Mark Goho, has made it his mission to capture 360º panoramas of Rochester parks external link to share with the world on Google Views. Mark’s latest project took him deep underground and, with a few clicks of a camera and mouse, he has given the general public unfettered access into the abandoned Rochester subway…

To start exploring, use the viewer below. Or better yet, launch the fullscreen experience external link.

Professionally, Mark works with Google to do something called Google Business View external link which is a lot like the more familiar Street View but inside businesses.

“I’ve been doing it for two years now,” Mark tells RocSubway via a Facebook message. “I started doing the parks back in 2012, and the virtual tours this Spring.”

For you shutterbugs, Mark uses a Canon 70D with Sigma 8mm lens. To stitch the panoramas together he uses PTGui external link. In this instance he also used a special photographic process known as High Dynamic Range (HDR) external link to capture amazing detail in extreme light conditions. If you were to physically venture into the tunnel, beyond the aqueduct bridge it’s so dark you’d need normally flood lights to see with this level of clarity.

And what’s more amazing is that this virtual tour is only partially complete. Mark is still working to compile shots and will be adding more in the near future – so be sure to check back soon.

Hat’s off to you, Mark!

This just made my day/night/week/universe. Thought you should know.

  2. Thomas Barnes says:

Guys this is so amazing and like the other guy said…this just made my day/night/week/universe!
I’ve always wanted to go down there but will not do it alone! I will be for sure showing my Mom since she and a lot of other elderly Residents in Rochester used to take the subway ….

  3. Patrick says:

    Fantastic!

  4. mikros says:

    That is fantastic!

  5. Mark G. says:

This is super cool. It was a great adventure and definitely a little scary – many interesting sounds under the roads. Thankfully I had a friend with me that had my back.

You might even catch a “ghost” of him in one of the images–see if you can find it!

  6. Colleen says:

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been down in the subway several times… walked the whole thing twice. Got some really great photos. I hope the city decides to preserve and promote this amazing piece of Rochester history!

  7. Renee says:

This is fantastic! Thanks to Mark Goho for doing this. We took our kids on the tour this year and they super dug it. We gave them free-reign with the camera and they had a lot of fun. They sat and watched several artists working, as well. What a great way to promote this Rochester gem.

  8. Jim says:

Thanks this was great, I did find the “ghost” haunting Rundel..

  9. Adam says:

    Yes that was fantastic.
Mark , I was wondering what that partial image was. Looks like he is holding a king can of beer lol. In that same shot there is a strange shadow or dark spot on the ground too. Looks like some sort of creature

  10. Neal says:

Amazing sharing tool! Now we can start to envision a future in Rochester where we can gather all year round and where winter has no bite. A constant miniature world’s fair where all we are and do in this region comes to celebrated. A warm and dry heart and hub of our Renaissance. A place where the world comes to and where we meet the world. Spice shops and bagel bars. Of music and science. Of mountain bikes and long long boards and a trolley to Susan B, Anthony’s house. A place where our summers never stop… and with a lots of parking!
We have an opportunity to become a great and glorious city again…
We are a city that helped change the world.
A city that made Hollywood possible.
    A city that up-stepped humanity.
A city of peace and freedom.
    A city near a huge wine district…
Oh, and let’s get some Zip lines are high false….OK?
Toronto is 120 miles away. They are the third biggest city in North America (not including Mexico City) and they’d love to come here if we make ourselves more attractive to them, thus “Broad Street Underground”, a gathering site for the Finger Lakes region…

  11. chris says:

Very cool!! Thank you for making this.

  12. Harry says:

I cam to the party too late, bugger! Google has discontinued this service which is a shame, living in Australia I’ll never be able to see these tunnels myself this was a brilliant idea/project to spread the spectacle.
