Drunken Hijinks and Homicide in Rochester’s Sibley Building

Friday, October 5th, 2012

This was the Sibley Building office, and murder scene, of J. Frank O'Connor, a tailor merchant. A sewing machine and its table have been knocked over and lie in front of the radiator. The cutting table is at the right. A lower table, on the left, holds a bolt of fabric, a pressing board for sleeves, and an electric iron. A chair and a box of material sit in front of the lower table. [PHOTO: Albert R. Stone Collection]
J. Frank O’Connor, known by his clients and friends as “Scrappy” O’Connor, was a merchant tailor. After a long weekend of partying, he would be murdered during a drunken battle in his office (shown above) on the second floor of Rochester’s Sibley Building. O’Connor’s body was found about 6:00 p.m., Monday, August 28, 1922. These are actual crime scene photos by Albert R. Stone…

Where’s Cogswell?

Friday, September 21st, 2012

This was the corner of Main and Fitzhugh Streets (1884). Can you find Cogswell? [PHOTO: Rochester Public Library]
Often times while I’m doing research for a story, I’ll stumble upon something new and get completely sidetracked. Today I was digging for information on the Academy Building when I found the image above. It’s a shot of the Rochester Savings Bank building located at the corner of West Main and Fitzhugh. The Academy Building is to the immediate left of the bank. But forget the buildings for now. Do you see that strange little man standing in the lower left corner of the photo? That was actually a drinking fountain named Cogswell…

Take What You Need or Thoughtless Prank? You Decide.

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

A flyer in a downtown parking garage selling Love, Peace, and Happiness? But no number to call. Dammit! [PHOTO: RochesterSubway.com]

Yesterday I was having my typical kind of crappy Monday when this flyer caught my attention in a downtown parking garage. It was selling things like Love, Peace, and Happiness. I smiled and thought to myself, “No way! How can this be? I need me some of that.” But when I moved in closer I noticed there was no name or number to call. “GODDAMMIT!!” I was pissed off again.

I swear I will find the evil-doer responsible for this and bring them to justice.

RGRTA Digs Up Rochester’s Old RKO Palace Theater

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

The former RKO Palace Theater on Clinton Ave. It was partially unearthed this week by crews building the future RTS bus terminal.
There are few places Rochesterians talk about with such fondness as the old RKO Palace Theater that once stood on Clinton Avenue. Looking at old pictures, I can see why. The place was all dressed up and sparkled inside and out like a glitzy Vegas showgirl. But like many of Rochester’s brick and mortar beauties, she grew old, was chopped up into little pieces, and buried where she stood. All in the name of “urban renewal.” Fast forward fifty years. RGRTA breaks ground on a new bus terminal. And guess what shows up? That’s right – the skeleton of Rochester’s most beautiful movie theater…

Genesee/North American Brewery Demolition. Photos by Rick U.

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Genesee Brewery, demolition of historic Cataract Brewhouse. [PHOTO: Rick U.- RocPx.com]
I received a message yesterday from a RocSubway reader named Rick U. Rick wanted to share some of his images from Genesee Brewery’s (aka North American Brewery’s) demolition of the once historic Cataract Brewhouse. By now I’ve seen just about all I can stomach of this disaster. I mean, this is how we create jobs in Rochester? Building parking lots on historic buildings? BUT, putting all that aside, this series of images is quite exceptional. And these are just a sampling from a MUCH larger album which I’ve linked to at the bottom of this gallery. Take a look…

Rochester, New York Jigsaw Puzzle

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

The Rochester NY jigsaw puzzle. 513 pieces.
I love collecting fun little bits of Rochester history. So a few years ago I bought this Rochester jigsaw puzzle on eBay. Well somehow it slipped behind my sofa and I just recently found it again. It’s like Christmas in July!

Entirely hand drawn, this 513 piece puzzle is jammed with local landmarks, businesses, and fun historic facts. Now I realize I’m a total geek-dork, but I could stare at this thing for days picking stuff out—it’s THAT much fun…

2 Minutes with Rochester’s Roadside Guitar Guy

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Yesterday I decided to spend 2 Minutes with Rochester's Roadside Guitar Guy.
The song is Patience by Guns N’ Roses. The man behind the guitar is Dave. I’ve seen Dave playing on the side of this I-490 service road in downtown Rochester for years. Today I finally got out of my car and spent a few minutes with him. He’s a real good guy. Stop and say hello if you see him…

Countdown to Destruction

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

As North American Breweries / Genesee Brewery are preparing to demolish the Cataract Brewhouse, we are preparing to capture the tragic event as it unfolds. Crystal Pix, Inc. (Fairport, NY) external link has graciously volunteered to document the development of the GardenAerial external link project, and as part of that story, the demolition of 13 Cataract will be immortalized as well… sadly.

Does Rochester Have a Parking Problem?

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Downtown Rochester, N.Y. Parking Map.
Yes, we have a parking problem. Quite simply, there’s too much of it. It’s EVERWHERE. No rhyme or reason or method to the madness. We lost control of this problem decades ago when we bulldozed half of our downtown in the name of urban renewal, and to this very day we continue to allow our few urban spaces and historic buildings to be paved over.

At its best, this is land that’s not being used for any productive purpose but to store our cars on. More than that, these ugly gray patches of land create voids in our community; Dead-zones where no one wants to be for any length of time. These are places not worth caring about. And our city is literally covered with them…

A Drive-Thru Rochester

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

Freeze frame from the video. This guy can often found on the corner of Monroe and Goodman peddling pizza and our camera happened to catch him while we were stopped at the light.
A few weeks ago I was driving home from my downtown office and happened to have my camera with me. Not sure why but I thought it be interesting to see what I’d capture if I left it on my dashboard for the ride. Now don’t try this at home—distracted driving is not cool. I’m a professional… idiot that is.

Anyway, the results I thought were pretty cool. And it got even cooler with some quick editing and quadruple speed playback. Throw in a mirror effect and some of that dope-ass hip hop music all the kids are listening to… and now we’ve got something worth sharing.

So go ahead—turn down the lights, pump up the volume, and hit it full screen. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Inner Loop Officially ‘Dead Man Walking’

Friday, September 9th, 2011

An aerial view of Rochester on April 25, 1963. On the right is the cleared right-of-way for the final segment of the Inner Loop. [PHOTO: Local History Division, Central Library of Rochester.]
It’s no secret that I am wholeheartedly in favor of removing Rochester’s Inner Loop roadway which encircles downtown and chokes it off from the surrounding neighborhoods like an ever tightening nooseexternal link. What we didn’t know until today was that City Council and Mayor Tom Richards feel the same…

I Spy a Bike Lane

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Saint Paul Street looking north from the Monroe County building. That smaller lane on the right side of the street is for bikes. Now all we need are some sharrows so it's not a big secret.
Last week fresh paint went down on Saint Paul Street – from the Monroe County Social Services building north to School #8 near Avenue A. But wait a cottonpickin’ second… why’s that lane so darn skinny? How am I supposed to squeeze my Hummer through there?

St. Paul, South and Clinton Avenues Could Soon Go Two Ways

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

North Clinton Avenue looking toward Main Street. This could one day become two-way traffic.
The City of Rochester has contracted with Laberge Groupexternal link of Albany, New York to determine the feasibility of converting the one-way street couplets of St. Paul Street/South Avenue and North/South Clinton Avenue between Byron Street and Cumberland Street to two-way traffic to improve neighborhood accessibility and walkability. Key considerations are expected to include impacts to traffic congestion, safety, parking, bicyclists, pedestrians, transit, and service provision.

Awe, Look Deer, A Kodak Moment

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Deer grazing in the middle of Rochester NY. Kodak headquarters is on the right. The Genesee River gorge is to the left.
Check this out. This photo is for real – absolutely no Photoshop involved here. You’re looking at the Kodak building to the right, and smack dab in the middle of the big bad City of Rochester… grazing deer. I’ve heard of Urban Greening before but come on.

Summer Subway FREEBIES! Free Rochester Wallpapers

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Dress up your PC with free Rochester wallpapers.
I’ve never shared this with anyone before… but I have a disorder. I’m an excessive wallpaper changer. I’m in therapy (and doing a little self-medicating) but still, I have a hard time keeping one background graphic on my computer desktop for more than a day or two (at most). Maybe I have ADHD? Or maybe I just need a life. I CAN’T HELP IT! I just get bored staring at the same image for too long. I tear through so many wallpapers I’ve had to start making my own…

Think Before You Defend Rochester’s Inner Noose

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

An aerial view of Rochester's crumbling and under-utilized Inner Loop.
A recent story in the City Newspaper, “Glamming Rochester’s Gateways” external link touched on the idea that filling in part of the Inner Loop would help reconnect certain neighborhoods with downtown and improve Rochester’s eastern gateways. Then came the raging comments from readers who blindly defended the inner loop and its many blessings.

One letter external link sent in from James R. Boehler went like this…

21 Stories for Scouts

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Woman rappels down the side of the First Federal office tower Friday afternoon as the lunchtime crowd looked on from Main Street. (photo: Copyright (c) 2010, Paul Baker. All rights reserved.)
If you happened to pass by Main Street on Friday afternoon you would have seen crowds of downtown workers staring up at the sky. That’s because more than 70 members of the local business community were dangling from the First Federal Building as part of a fundraiser organized by the Seneca Waterways Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Participants each raised $1,000 to earn themselves the opportunity to rappel down the exterior of the 21-story, “flying saucer” capped building at 28 East Main Street. Proceeds will be used to support urban programs of the Boy Scouts.

RGRTA’s Transit Center as seen from ‘A Town Square’

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Howard Decker is new to Rochester. He moved here last Fall after spending much of his professional life designing transit systems from Chicago to Houston to Washington DC. He is a lifelong historic preservationist, an FAIA, architect, urban designer, and former Chief Curator of the National Building Museum. As a self-proclaimed “transit-geek” he is now spending time familiarizing himself with, and blogging about Rochester and working with groups such as the RRCDC and Reconnect Rochester external link. Last week Howard attended the public input meeting on RGRTA’s planned transit center on Mortimer Street. Today he posted his opinion on the whole thing. Read his article (below). And please attend the final public input meeting external link tomorrow night (May 5).

Buses and Subways and Trains, Oh My

Rochester's Main Street and Clinton Avenue looking South. 1929.A Town Square (May 4, 2010) — Our home place here is in the midst of considering a change to its transit system. As usual, Rochester is the perfect case study of how cities can screw themselves up with the greatest of ease. My newly adopted city, like so many of its sister places, has made a vast litany of urban gaffes over the last century, and we are about to see yet another. Let me explain.

In the early 20th century, Rochester had a system of streetcars and interurbans and even a subway, all of which provided transit options to citizens. In those days, say the 1920s, the population of the city was quite a bit larger than today, though the region was much smaller – sprawl was only just getting started.

By the mid 1950s, everything was gone. Streetcars gone. Interurbans gone. Subway gone. Left on the roads? Cars, and buses. Retail was headed out of town, following all those who began to sprawl. Downtown’s fate was sealed…
