37 Eagle Street Final Rendering
By Matthew Denker

When we last spoke, it was Halloween, and we were on the eve of our first zoning board of appeals and preservation board hearings. It’s now March and we’ve been to two hearings for each board, and spoiler alert, we’ve received approval(s) from each. Yay! But now that we’re here, let’s take a look at the process and all the fun we had…

Public Forum: Development in Preservation Districts

Public Forum: Development in Preservation Districts
The Landmark Society external link is partnering with the Park-Meigs Neighborhood Association to hold a public forum on the evening of Tuesday, May 21 at 597 East Avenue external link. Up for discussion: the timely and controversial topic of new development in preservation districts. This is a community conversation you will NOT want to miss.

A panel of speakers, representing developers, homeowners, business owners, urban planners, and The Landmark Society, will offer their perspective, followed by an open question and answer session. Speakers include Wayne Goodman, Executive Director of The Landmark Society; Glenn Kellogg, Urban Advisors; Joe Hanna, Hanna Properties; Steve Vogt, Rochester Young Professionals. RocSubway contributor, Matthew Denker will also weigh in. Can new development benefit preservation districts? How can the new co-exist with the old? What is “good” development? These are some of the questions this forum will attempt to address.

Follow this link external link for more information.

On The Fence Between 933 University Avenue & Eastman House

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Initial proposed design for apartment complex at 933 University Ave.
Okay, so I’m on the fence – sort of. Remember this proposed apartment complex at 933 University Avenue? After the Eastman House and other neighbors complained about the design, Morgan Management went back to the drawing board (or Photoshop or whatever) and they came back with this…

Off the Beaten Path: Rochester’s Beach Avenue

Monday, July 16th, 2012

This used to be the northern spur of Beach Avenue. The street has been replaced with lawns and gardens, but the sidewalk is still here - taking pedestrians on a nice little divergence.
With all of this amazing summer weather lately, I’ve taken the opportunity to enjoy some long bike rides up and down the lower Genesee River Gorge. A few nights ago I made my way all the way up to the beach at Charlotte via Lake Ave and took the bendy turn onto Beach Avenue. Not too far beyond the Ontario Beach Pavilion I noticed the sidewalk diverges from the street, making a rather abrupt turn between some very handsome looking beachside homes. So, I followed it. And I left the city of Rochester far, far behind…
