   I don’t mind the retro “gold” look, but they should nix the blue at the top and keep it simple like the old plates of the 70’s and 80’s. See http://www.15q.net/ny.html

   I guess I agree with JT – keep it simple. In Florida we have 130 different license plates. That’s it – 130! There is a different tag for every branch of the armed services, every college and university and every cause known to mankind.

   Patrick, when you order one of those different Florida plates does a portion of the $$ go to support that cause? I could really get behind something like that. But to force everyone to buy new plates just to make money for the state seems like total BS to me. Jeez, get creative NY.

   Mike, there is a $25 annual fee plus a $2 registration fee. The organization sponsoring the tag gets the $25. The state gets the $2. These fees are in addition to the normal registration fee which is based on the weight of the vehicle and is between $19.50 and $44.00.

   Thanks Patrick! Yep, that is certainly a win for New Yorkers. Of course Gov. Paterson is patting himself on the back. He called it “a Christmas present to the people” and says it shows he’s listening. Anybody want to join me in a round of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow?

   I don’t think I have ever seen an uglier license plate than the new New York plates. They will ruin the look of any car you put them on! I would like to know what idiot was responsible for this design decision.

   Since the time of this post I’ve started seeing a lot of these plates on the streets. I’m still not a fan, but I can see why some people might like the retro look. I just don’t think blue and orange should ever go together except maybe in a fruit salad.

    These plates are repulsive. Did anyone ask us (the taxpayer) if we wanted them? Of course not. We should not buckle under pressure to pay for new plates when there is nothing wrong with the old plates. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $25 to blow on something I don’t want.

    @Charlene, Gov. David Paterson would actually have us believe that he cut us some great deal on these plates. Originally he asked the state to make all of us update our plates and registration THIS YEAR – so the state could cash in right away. He backed down on that requirement. Now we can wait until our registration expires before we have to buy the new plates. Wow. Some gift.
