RocLinks 3/7/15

Rochester Lower Falls at Night in the Snow [PHOTO: RocPx.com]
By Matthew Denker

From local development to just plain news of the weird, here are your RocLinks for this past week…

A Moment of Silence

Sad news – Dominic Pane, proprietor of Mr. Dominic’s at the Lake, has passed away external link. I know I am sometimes hard on Charlotte, but Mr. Dominic’s has been a fixture in town for over 40 years. He will be missed.

Shopping Update!

BENRUS, a military-themed lifestyle brand (ok…) has opened its first retail store external link here in Rochester. Check it out over in the Culver Road Armory.

Personal Folly

Since I get to pick the links, you get one to a review of the St. Vincent show external link that was at Water St. Music Hall a few nights ago. I think she (Annie Clark) is spectacular, and spoiler alert, the reviewers do too.

Continuing Fortune(s)

For the 18th year in a row, Wegmans is one of Fortune’s top companies to work for external link. They would probably have been on the list longer had it been started more than 18 years ago.

Flying Under the Radar

And finally, evading notice by just about anyone, the zoning board is reviewing a variance external link (PDF) this month for a 3-story, 60 unit apartment building on Monroe Ave at Union. The property is owned by Buckingham. If anyone has any details about this, I’d love to hear them.

As always, use the comments below as open discussion for anything in these links – or let us know if there’s a topic you’d like to see us hit more aggressively in future RocLinks. Have a great weekend!

Hey Matt…the “reviewing a variance” link is broken. I want to read it!! 🙂

  2. Sorry about that. Click this – http://www.cityofrochester.gov/zoningboard/ and then the March Agenda at the bottom of the page.

  3. David says:

Thanks for the update to the link Matt. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for development on the newly paved inner loop. If Buckingham is willing to pull the trigger first here, it could quickly trigger other developers to follow suit. The more density with people living in the East End/Monroe area, the more businesses that can survive down there!

  4. Ben says:

I agree, that end of Monroe has been begging for more activity, this was only a matter of time. Hoping the next phase of Alexander Park gets underway soon too, would be good to show other developers that people do indeed want to live down there by the time the inner loop parcels start hitting the market.

  5. kmannkoopa says:

The site at Monroe is actually on Alexander Street. Here’s the link to it on the City property viewer:

    http://maps.cityofrochester.gov/propinfo/default.htm?parcelId=12149000010120030000

    The Google Street View:

    https://www.google.com/maps/@43.14745,-77.598502,3a,75y,321.1h,82.24t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sYUwLLunS1tRAxm2UXJU6WQ!2e0

The parking lot right across from Monroe High School.

As it is a housing project not looking for government money, it is almost certainly worthwhile.

  6. It’s sort of a big site period (going all the way through to Monroe). Without any plans, it’s unclear how the building would be sited. I’m also not sure we know if there are any subsidies for it either, but it’d be impressive if there were not.

  7. Stan says:

The Monroe Ave. variance request is from East House, which is a nonprofit that runs addiction treatment centers.
