8 Things to Keep In Mind While Moving to Rochester, NY

December 4th, 2023

Are you planning to move to another state with your family? Statistics show one-third of people who are renters will move each year. If you’re not already considering Rochester, NY, there are many reasons you should do so. Here are some of the reasons why you should make Rochester your next home:

1. Great Educational Opportunities

According to Home and Money, Rochester is the 33rd-most educated city in the country. The University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology are near the city’s center. Cornell University is less than two hours’ drive. The same source rates the public schools in Rochester as excellent. These institutions are great for families or individuals moving to further educate themselves.

2. Excellent Financial Status

One of Rochester’s many advantages is its affordable cost of living. Compared to large cities such as Manhattan, the cost of living is considerably cheaper. According to Home and Money, living costs are 17% less than the national average. The same source cites Rochester’s median annual salary as over $40,000.

3. Favorable Housing Market

The housing market in Rochester is very favorable. The average time for houses to remain on the market is two weeks. The houses in the area retain much of the city’s historical charm. According to Rochester Real Estate Blog, Rochester boasts some of the most affordable homes in the region. Rochester also has some of the warmest and most welcoming communities, according to the same source.

4. Safe and Easy Commuting Conditions

Rochester has a safe and modern public transit system. However, according to Home and Money, centralized jobs make commuting affordable for most of Rochester’s citizens. According to Broadly, there are over 280,000 auto repair facilities in the U.S. If commuters need help with their cars, they’ll be glad to know many of those companies are located in Rochester.

5. Opportunities for Health Solutions

According to Cleveland Clinic, four out of five people complain of lower back pain during their lifetime. According to Health Grades, there are almost 200 chiropractors in Rochester. Additionally, U.S. News and World Report ranked Rochester General Hospital as one of the best hospitals in its region. This city is also home to many of the finest golf courses in the Northeast, so you’ll be able to get lots of outdoor exercise.

6. Festivals Bring Fun

Rochester is home to several nationally known festivals. If you love jazz music, Xerox sponsors a famous annual jazz festival there. Lovers of flowers come from all over the country to drink in the sights and smells of the annual Lilac Festival in Rochester. During the winter, the Corn Hill Festival celebrates all things winter – including a Santa who lives in an igloo.

7. Sports Fans’ Paradise

Rochester is home to sports teams like the Rochester Nighthawks and the Western New York Flash. Hockey enthusiasts will be glad to learn this city is an hour-and-half drive from Buffalo. There, you can enthusiastically cheer for the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills. The local colleges also contribute to the sports culture by offering plenty of collegiate sporting events.

8. International Cuisine Choices

Rochester offers food for people who enjoy many different cuisines. You can sample authentic Southern cooking at Dinosaur Barbecue. If you’d prefer Italian food, you can find a wood-fired pizza at Fiorella. Those seeking an all-natural menu can go to Edibles Bistro.

Rochester is sometimes called the “Flour City” due to its use as a port on the Erie Canal for transporting millet and other grains. This sense of history infuses the city’s modernity with a contemporary feel. If the above features appeal to you, Rochester may be the right place to move.
