   I feel old and conservative saying this…but I really dislike the punching one by Connor Harrington. It’s beautifully done but I’m not sure how images of violence do good for the Rochester community.

   I think it’s ok that you feel “old and conservative.” That’s sort of the point of art; to make us feel something.

   This one definitely made me feel a little uncomfortable. Uneasy. Especially while I was standing out there in an empty industrial lot in the heart of our inner city staring up at it. It’s enormous. It feels like it could explode right off of that wall and crush me. And it’s setting adds to the drama. That’s what I love about it.

   Does the image help or harm the Rochester community? I’m not sure. But it certainly gets us to think. And to talk about where we’re all coming from.

   Is it safe to bike on the El Camino trail by yourself? I don’t mean to be one of Those People (I’m used to Plymouth-Exchange) but I’m unfamiliar with the area and I know it’s not one of Rochester’s best.

   @ELF, I understand the question. I believe it’s as safe as PLEX and I’ll go one step further and say it’s as safe as biking down any part of the Riverway Trail or Erie Canal Trail during the day. I’m a 30 something male from Queens NY, so my perception of “safe” might be different than others… just don’t look like a tourist and you’ll be fine 🙂

   But I would recommend taking a friend anyway. The experience will be better if you share it.

   Since you’re kind of in their neighborhood, keep an eye out for Truck 6. The guys who work there contracted a graffiti artist to paint the ladder signs on the side of the truck. I forgot the guy’s name, but know he’s pretty well known in the Northeast, if not the entire city. Guess you can call it mobile wall therapy.

   The full name of this trail is the “The El Camino: Butterhole-Seneca Park Trail.” (http://www.cityofrochester.gov/elcamino/) I know what Seneca Park is. Does anyone know what local geography is called Butterhole?

   @Dagger, excellent question! I don’t know why I have never researched that one (probably because I was too busy laughing like a 12 year old). But here’s what I found out…

   The trail starts in a neighborhood that was founded by German immigrants. Today this would be the Upper Falls Neighborhood. These early settlers built a brewery by the High Falls and established dairy farms that gave the area to the north the name “Butterhole.”

   Of course today we have a very large Hispanic community here, hence the El Camino (the path, road, etc.)

   I just walked the El Camino trail today, July 25,2015. I felt perfecty safe. I am not afraid until I am afraid.
   I definitely went because I saw the photos here on Rochester Subway. I guess I walked right past the Connor Harrington mural because I never saw it. Can you tell me where that one is?
   There is a rather out of the way mural in my neighborhood. Is is on an abandoned factory wall on Flint Street in the Plex neighborhood and it is visible fron the river trail, West side.
   I have no photo. It is monochromatic depiction of what I take to be a nestling bird on it’s back supporting an egg with it’s feet.
   It seems similar in style to those rats on St. Paul downtown.

   My Bad I just founr out that the critters I took for rats in that Mural on St. Paul are bears.

    Maria, I’m glad that this post inspired someone to go out and explore the El Camino Trail. If memory serves me correctly the Connor Harrington mural was on a warehouse building south of route 104. The building is just beyond the chain link fence on the west side of the trail. At the time of this post there was a break in the fence which was how I was able to slip in and take these photos. The vegetation may be overgrown during this time of year so you may have to hunt a bit for it.

    Thanks for that info on the Connor Harrington “fight” mural. I will keep my eyes peeled when I go back there with a group of women who are gathering to cycle the El Camino trail later this month.
    I am glad to see you are still active with this fascinating source of information about Rochester.
