Walkability in Rochester: Where Can and Can’t You Walk?

April 15th, 2024

Walking is one of the best ways to improve your health, and it’s totally free to do as well. Keep in mind that the latest data, according to the CDC, estimates that 28.7 million, or 8.7% of the population in America was diagnosed with diabetes in 2019. With regular exercise, you can lower your chances of getting ill or find it easier to manage a chronic illness that you may be having. If you live in Rochester, you may be wondering about where you can walk and where you can’t. This information can help you take the best care of your health and stay safe while you explore various areas around your home. Here’s a handy guide to help you figure out where you can walk and where you can’t walk in Rochester.

The Eerie Canal Trail

One of the best places to walk in Rochester is along the Eerie Canal trail. There are a number of attractions here, with the system consisting of four canals and up to 16 bridges. The Eerie Canal itself passes through Oneida Lake, which is a national landmark. Clearly, there’s a lot to see and experience along the Eerie Canal. This is a great place to take a walk if you’d like to also enjoy water sports like boating, kayaking, canoeing, and sailboarding.

There are also various land-based sports that you can take part in if you prefer, such as biking and hiking. This area is great for recreation, so you may want to schedule other activities for another day. These activities are things like shopping and visiting your doctor, which is advisable to do once a year. That said, you can also walk to your doctor’s appointment if you’re around the East and Southeast parts of the city, where there are a number of businesses.

Cobb’s Hill

Cobb’s Hill is one of the other areas in Rochester where you can go for a walk. There are amazing neighborhoods around here and some amazing places to visit. There are also beautiful parks in proximity, which are another one of the attractions that you could benefit from visiting as far as health and safety are concerned. By walking around to visit these places, you can keep fit and also lower the chances that you could get involved in an accident.

Keep in mind that when someone suffers an injury from a car accident, it typically takes several months to fully assess the true extent of their injuries. If you’ve already been involved in an accident, and you know this, it may be all the more reason why you may be better off walking. Keep in mind that you can also be prescribed to take regular walks as part of your treatment if you’ve suffered an injury. That said, it’s a good idea to find out about the specific areas where you can go for a walk whenever you like.

Neighborhood of the Arts

Another one of the best places to walk in Rochester is the Neighborhood of the Arts. There’s a thriving art and culture scene in this area, with museums, art galleries, and even auditoriums. If you want to enjoy the scenery and get the most out of the art and cultural diversity in Rochester, this is one of the best places to walk through.

Lyle Avenue and Jay St. Area

As for the places where it’s not a good idea to walk, these are two examples. These areas tend to not be well-lit at night and may have a lot of foot traffic during the day. If you don’t know your way around Rochester, you may take a turn and end up in an area you’d much rather not be in. For your safety, it’s best to avoid the whole block south of Norton from St. Paul to Portland.

These are some of the places where you can walk in Rochester and one that’s best to avoid. This can make it safer for you to enjoy your walk and have a great experience. As a result, you’re assured of enjoying the walks that you take and getting back home healthy and whole.
