  1. MrRochester says:

You misquoted your attached story. Rochester is the 5th poorest city, NOT metro. If the suburbs were included in the story, it would be very different. Check this: http://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/news/2013/10/04/pittsford-leads-all-upstate-new-york.html

    And this: http://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/stories/2002/06/17/story3.html?page=all

  2. MrRochester says:

Also remember that it costs next to nothing to live in Rochester. Salaries are low for low skilled positions. Our cost of living should be compared to other cities where it is dirt cheap to live. This report will be good to get federal and state money.

  3. MrRochester… I’m grateful for the fact check, but I believe I got this right. I intentionally used the word “metro” based on the report itself. Here is the chart from page 17…

The report makes explicit the following definitions:

“Region” refers to the nine-county region (Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates). The nine-county region is used in Sections 1-3 of the report.

“Metro” refers to the Metropolitan Statistical Areas established by the U.S. Census Bureau. For our area, this includes the SIX COUNTIES of Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, and Yates. The metro unit is used where comparisons are made to other parts of the country (Section 4).

This is a very important point and I’m glad you raised it. According to this report, poverty in our region is not confined to our inner city.

  4. No wait, now I’m re-reading the charts and I think you’re right. The chart takes the top 75 metros, and then looks at the major city within those metros. You’re right! Thank you! I’ll post an update.

  5. Emily says:

St Joseph’s Neighborhood Center is a wonderful medical service center that treats all uninsured people and serves many homeless folks, however it is not a shelter. It is directly across the street from St Joseph’s House of Hospitality, which is the shelter and soup kitchen. There is a lot of overlap, but they are entirely different organizations (confusing, I know). So by all means donate to SJNC, but also remember St Joe’s House of hospitality at 402 South Ave. I’m just correcting the reference in the article. Great portraits. Thanks.

  6. Thanks Emily. I fixed the link.

  7. Leia says:

I can tell you who two of your nameless men are:

The fifth from the bottom is Gerald.
The third one from the bottom is Bradley.

Gerald you can find at St. Joe’s – Bradley at HOM.
