A Better Bus Schedule for Rochester

August 3rd, 2013

RGRTA has asked for help redesigning one of their most important transit tools. Meet the new RTS bus schedules.
If you’ve been following along, you know how we’ve been trying to apply a little design for the betterment of our transit system. First we took a shot at designing a better bus stop sign for Rochester. RGRTA is currently studying that concept in anticipation of one day replacing their existing signs. Next we designed a better bus pass for which RGRTA gave a nod of approval. The new passes will be rolled out very soon!

But wait, there’s more! RGRTA has now asked for help redesigning one of the most important transit tools of all; their big, bad, bus schedules…

WHOA! Not so fast.

It appears RocSubway jumped the gun and accidentally published some information that wasn’t ready for primetime. New bus schedule designs are being worked on, but it will be some time before they are finalized and ready to be shared. If you caught the sneak peek, congrats. And thanks for providing your feedback!

To be continued…

I LOVE this! I don’t take the bus because Google maps tells me that from my home in Browncroft to RIT, I’d be riding for 1 hour 41 minutes. I can make it in 20 minutes by car in good traffic. But good design is the first step to creating more ridership, and making the experience better for regulars. Looking forward to the next installment.

  2. craftyb says:

Brilliant. Absolutely BRILLIANT. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! These are beautiful and I can even tell what’s basically going on even from the distance these tiny pixels provide. Kiss the designers for me. Or snuggle up to a mirror if it’s you. Truly well done!

  3. Rick says:

Wow, these are very nice. I definitely like the larger map showing the surrounding areas, and leaving white space makes the overall feel less “cluttery”.

  4. Mike says:

Mike, you’ve done it again. Absolutely brilliant. I am a 43-year-old college educated city resident, and when I want to help one of my four public-transit-friendly teenage children take a bus to their intended destination, I have to rely on my wife to help decipher the schedules. This is such and improvement. And as a Geneseo grad, the expanded color versions are gorgeous. I hope you realize what a service you perform for our city with this blog and efforts like this.

  5. Jason Haremza says:

Where have you been all my life? Ok, well, where have you been since I moved to Rochester over 10 years ago?

Seriously, these are amazing. Just tremendous. Hats off to you and the folks at RGRTA for recognizing the importance of schedule clarity and legibility for the occasional rider, and more fundamentally, just good graphic design. Well done!

  6. John says:

Saw it before it was yanked, looked good. The schedule is a major weakness for RTS. I believe I’d be described as a “choice rider” one of the biggest hurdles to me riding the bus is the schedule. A lot of times when I look to use the bus, the schedule is too much of a hassle. I just think “screw this, easier to bike/drive.” Easier schedules would be nice, as I get more serious in cycling as a transit option, the bus is a good range extender or a way to get through “hostile” territory (dangerous suburban streets).

The other major hurdle, which is much harder and more expensive to fix, is that taking the bus is slow. I can comfortably bike to many places in the same or less time than I can get there on the bus.

  7. @John, thanks! If you got to see the schedule before it was pulled, you may have noticed something new… something that should make certain trips much quicker 😉

  8. Jason Haremza says:

Oh for the love of god why does everything in this town move so SLOW! New schedules already, RGRTA!!! A design-savvy public is eagerly waiting!!!

  9. John says:

I must have missed it, I can be a bit slow sometimes haha. It did look way better than the current ones and was much easier to read. I think it’ll make a lot of people who might not ride the bus, pick up a schedule and take a look because it looks inviting, professional, and clean. The old schedules were cluttered, ugly, and old looking.
