Keeping Your Construction Site Safe From Theft

January 18th, 2024

If you have a construction site in Rochester, one of your priorities should be keeping it safe from vandals and criminals. This is a great way for you to avoid having to deal with issues like loss and other complications that may come up in an unsecured site. Here are a few of the ways in which you can keep your construction site safe from theft so that you get the best outcome when all is said and done.

Always Lock the Doors and Windows

While this first tip may seem basic, you would be surprised to learn how many people actually disregard it or forget about it. The doors and windows are generally the first places that burglars and vandals attempt to enter a building through, and this makes it crucial for you to always confirm that all the doors and windows of the buildings on your construction site are closed and locked. This may have aided a majority of the 11,504 burglaries which, according to Statista, were reported on construction sites across the United States in 2021. While a dedicated criminal will look for other means to gain access, they’re going to spend more time and may fail in the end, which would be a win for you.

Keep Things Out of Sight

The saying that out of sight is out of mind can prove to be beneficial when you’re trying to secure your construction site in Rochester. That’s because a would-be criminal would need an extra degree of commitment to try and find out if there’s something worth stealing in the first place before they get to committing the actual crime. With this in mind, always draw blinds of buildings and cover whatever can’t be placed inside with weighted tarps.

Secure Keys Off-Site

To make sure that there’s a low likelihood of the keys to important spaces ending up in the wrong hands, consider securing them off-site. This can make it hard for vandals to find their way into rooms and buildings with valuables and expensive equipment in them. It’s a fact that there may be expensive things on the typical site that could attract criminals when you consider the fact that construction makes up roughly 6% of United States GDP, according to Forbes. Give a responsible member of the team responsibility over the keys if you’re not in a position to take care of them yourself.

Install a Fence

Another way in which you can try and keep valuables on your site in Rochester out of sight is by installing a fence around your site. This fence should be too high to easily scale without a ladder, something that’s additionally going to help safeguard the items on site in the building. Additionally, the fence should be solid and hard-wearing so that it’s not easy to break or otherwise get through without considerable effort.

Buy Storage to Lock Valuables

If you don’t have any complete buildings on your construction site, you should consider buying storage or shipping containers in which you’ll lock up your valuables. This can make it easy for you to take care of the valuable equipment on-site without having to move things to and fro. You should install security cameras in and around the storage in question in case someone does manage to make their way into the storage that you have. If they do, they’ll be caught and charged accordingly. If they steal property worth $1,000 to $1,500, this will be considered a class B felony theft. If the property is worth over $1,500, that will be a class A felony theft.

These tips should help you keep your Rochester construction site safe from theft. As a result, you’re sure to save yourself the time and resources you’d have had to spend on dealing with a theft that occurred. You’ll have a successful project that’s free of unnecessary hassle.
