4 Tips for Starting a Community Garden in Rochester

August 21st, 2023

A community garden is an important part of any community that’s willing to start and maintain one. This is because it can provide fresh foodstuffs and vegetables to the community. It also avails an amazing opportunity for people to enjoy spending time outdoors doing something positive. If you’d like to start one, take a look at the tips below which can help you start a community garden that’s going to thrive and improve your community immensely.

1. Find Natural Insect Repellent Methods

To make sure that your community garden in Rochester has the best chance to thrive, it’s important to keep insects away. If you’ll plant food crops, then it’s best to steer clear of chemicals and go the natural route. Thankfully, this is easy to do because you can simply grow plants that insects don’t like so that you can repel them naturally. Some plants that insects don’t like include chives, onion, garlic, and even chrysanthemums. These can help you keep your community garden safe from the ravages of insects trying to feed on your crops.

You can also take additional measures like elevating your garden so that it’s not easily accessible to flying insects. For this, you can use pallets which are generally easy to find and convert into gardening surfaces. Look for the right pallets, noting that sod pallets cost 70% more than hydroseeding, according to This Old House. Shop around for both pallets and pallet garden designs so that you have an easy time when it comes to doing the job.

2. Give the Plants the Room That They Need

Remember that your Rochester community garden should follow a few gardening rules to make sure that your plants have a good chance to thrive. One of these rules is to allow your plants the room that they need to grow well. If you plant them too close together, it’s going to be hard for you to do things like pruning. They may also not get to their best because they’ll be struggling for room.

You should also use the right techniques to plant your garden. On this note, remember that hydroseeding is the highest quality, most cost-effective, and fastest method of landscape and erosion control practices and seeding lawns. With hydroseeding, grass should begin growing in just seven days, and in three to four weeks, the lawn will be well established.

3. Decide What to Grow Early on

Next, you need to decide on the specific plants that you intend to grow in your community garden from the beginning. This will help you figure out other details for your Rochester community garden. These include your budget for the project, the space that you need, and the exact orientation of the garden in terms of sun position. With proper planning, you can actually grow a mix of food crops and flowers. This will be welcome in the community, given the fact that 73% of Americans highly appreciate flowers, according to the Society of American Florists.

4. Take Care When Handling Diseased Plants

Last but not least, remember that your crops might fall ill at one point or another. You should be prepared for this by learning about the different diseases that affect crops such as those you intend to grow. Various plant illnesses and diseased may call for varying remedies, but remember that there are a few basic rules to follow regardless of the specific plant disease that you’re dealing with. One of these is that it’s important to handle diseased plants with care lest you spread the diseases to the entire garden.

These tips should help you start a community garden that will boost your lifestyle as well as that of your entire community. Keep in mind that teamwork is important in this case, and for it to achieve the desired outcome, communication must be effective. With time, you’ll improve your skills and you can be happy that you made a positive difference in your community.
