Mr. Ross will be at the Public Library on Monroe Ave. at 6:30 p.m. to talk about his new book, <i>Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Ross was the head of\u0003 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actfortransit.org\/\" target=\"_new\">Maryland&#8217;s Action Committee for Transit <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> during much of its long fight to build a light rail line outside Washington, D.C. After a 25-year battle, the Purple Line will begin construction next year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dead-End-Suburban-American-Urbanism\/dp\/0199360146\/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0\" target=\"_new\"><i>Dead End<\/i> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> he traces how the ideal of \u0003a safe, green, orderly retreat for the middle class mutated into the McMansion- and strip mall-ridden suburbs of today. And he explores the historical, sociological and economic roots of suburban sprawl.<\/p>\n<p>Parris Glendening, President of Smart Growth America&#8217;s Leadership Institute, and former Governor of Maryland said, &#8220;Ben Ross paints the big picture of the battle between sprawl and community from the historic perspective, to the current conflicts to a vision of better land use process.
