Instead, can we take a moment to consider that which we\u2019ve lost? That which we can still repair?<\/p>\n<p>This week, let\u2019s talk about parks. Specifically, let\u2019s talk about Lomb Memorial Park, and Schiller Park. But first, take a look at Columbus Circle in New York City (above). Oh man! Look at poor Christopher Columbus hanging out there all alone in the middle of traffic. At least he has a convenient parking spot for his car. Wait, what? You say that Columbus Circle doesn\u2019t look anything like that? Well, I guess it doesn\u2019t, now&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a title=\"Columbus Circle now. [PHOTO: Liberty Helicopters]\" rel=\"lightbox-fillingInReparations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0px 0px 6px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-02.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Columbus Circle now. And with that, we arrive at the subject of this week\u2019s Filling In.<\/p>\n<h3>Lomb Memorial Park<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Henry Lomb Memorial, Rochester NY. Wait, there <i>is<\/i> no after? It looks just like this now? Well that\u2019s a real let down.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lomb Memorial Park, Rochester NY. [IMAGE: Google Maps]\" width=\"406\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt\u2019s a shame Henry Lomb isn\u2019t as famous as Christopher Columbus. In any event, let\u2019s imagine that we were to rearrange the street grid here just a little bit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lomb Memorial Park repaired.\" rel=\"lightbox-fillingInReparations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0px 0px 6px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-05.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Lomb Memorial Park repaired.\" width=\"406\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBam! Now we have a working park again. Thank you Henry Lomb. <\/p>\n<h3>Schiller Park<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Schiller Monument, Rochester NY. [PHOTO: Rochester City Hall Photo Lab]\" rel=\"lightbox-fillingInReparations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-06.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0px 0px 6px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-06.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Schiller Monument, Rochester NY. [PHOTO: Rochester City Hall Photo Lab]\" width=\"406\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf you thought Henry Lomb was less-than-famous, imagine how Freidrich von Schiller feels. This poor guy was a German-American poet over 200 years ago. Fittingly, Mr. Schiller wrote a poem entitled Hope. Here\u2019s an excerpt:<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:12px; margin:0px 0px 0px 10px;\">It is no empty, fawning deceit,<br \/>\nBegot in the brain of a jester,<br \/>\nProclaimed aloud in the heart it is:<br \/>\nWe are born for that which is better!<br \/>\nAnd what the innermost voice conveys,<br \/>\nThe hoping spirit ne\u2019er that betrays.<\/div>\n<p>Unfittingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=rochester+ny&#038;ll=43.161001,-77.605217&#038;spn=0.001837,0.002433&#038;client=safari&#038;oe=UTF-8&#038;hnear=Rochester,+Monroe,+New+York&#038;gl=us&#038;t=h&#038;z=19\" target=\"_new\">here&#8217;s <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> where Mr. Schiller&#8217;s monument lives today&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Schiller Park, Rochester NY. [IMAGE: Google Maps]\" rel=\"lightbox-fillingInReparations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-07.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0px 0px 6px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-07.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Schiller Park, Rochester NY. [IMAGE: Google Maps]\" width=\"406\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSchiller Monument was originally located at East Main and University Avenue. The monument was moved to Schiller Park (previously known as Franklin Square) at Andrews and Franklin Streets during the construction of the Inner Loop. The new Inner Loop also sliced Schiller Park in half.<\/p>\n<p>I guess Mr. Schiller is left \u201choping\u201d that one of the 18,000 cars that drive by on the inner loop each day somehow notice his bust on the embankment. I\u2019d love to draw some fancy rendering of what could be done to Schiller Park to restore it to its former glory. I\u2019d love to wax eloquently on what it could be, but we already know&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Schiller Park as it was when it was Franklin Square, 1930's.\" rel=\"lightbox-fillingInReparations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:0px 0px 6px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/filling-in-reparations-08.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Schiller Park as it was when it was Franklin Square, 1930's.\" width=\"406\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Damon Albarn once said, \u201cPut it back together.\u201d  Let\u2019s do this Rochester.
