Along the way they drink, they smoke, they nearly get run off of a railroad bridge by a speeding locomotive yada yada yada. Everyone who&#8217;s seen <i>Stand By Me<\/i> loves it for the same reason\u2014it beckons to a time in our lives when we&#8217;re just drifting along in search of a good thrill. A few weeks ago I got an email from a guy named Russ and his story immediately brought back images of that Corey Feldman flick. Russ&#8217; story may never be made into a Stephen King novel or a Hollywood movie, but it takes place inside the Rochester Subway tunnels\u2014between 1965 and 1968\u2014and it&#8217;s just plain fun.<br \/>\nTake it away Russ&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8220;When i was a kid we would play in the subway all the time. We would go in from <nobr><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?client=safari&#038;q=broad+street+rochester&#038;oe=UTF-8&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;hl=en&#038;ll=43.158134,-77.625167&#038;spn=0.002011,0.004007&#038;t=h&#038;z=18\" target=\"_new\">Broad Street<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"External Link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/nobr> behind <nobr><a href=\"http:\/\/www.garbageplate.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Nick Tahoe&#8217;s<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"External Link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/nobr> or Brown and Broad St. We would get cat tails and put gas on them and used them like torches and walk in to the tunnel and come out at the ticket booth near <nobr><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;source=s_q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=court+street+rochester&#038;sll=43.158134,-77.625167&#038;sspn=0.002011,0.004007&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.153395,-77.607899&#038;spn=0.002012,0.004007&#038;t=h&#038;z=18\" target=\"_new\">Court St.<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"External Link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/nobr> where the <nobr><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/abandoned_rochester_subway_14.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[russ]\" title=\"I think these are the \"arches\" Russ is remembering. These are the stairs once used to bring pedestrians to the Subway platform at South Avenue. Their are great big steel doors in the subway where they would unload freight to the stores from boxcars. There is also a pond in there by the ticket booth.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t tell you how much fun we had in a place we were not to be\u2014we were told all the time to stay out of the subway. One time my friend Bruce who lived on Charles St. mother seen me fall in the subway from the wall in the back and went to call for help till Bruce told his mother i did not fall\u2014I jumped onto the train. I was in big trouble&#8230; she called my mother.<\/p>\n<p>We were friends with the bums and would trade wine for smokes we new them all, and were never afraid of them. That was our play ground and we felt at home in there.
