From Eyesore to Opportunity: a snapshot of adaptive reuse in Rochester N.Y.\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAll the controversy over whether or not to demolish the 120 year-old brewhouse at <a href=\"https:\/\/rochestersubway.com\/savecataract\/\" target=\"_new\">13 Cataract Street <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> got us thinking. Those in favor of demolishing the building say it&#8217;s an eyesore and a haven for drug dealers; even prostitutes. So, just remove the building and our problems go away.<\/p>\n<p>Right?<\/p>\n<p>But if we demolished every eyesore in Rochester, would we have solved all the City&#8217;s problems? Or might we end up tossing the proverbial &#8220;baby&#8221; out with the bath water? Over the past two weeks we&#8217;ve reviewed at some local eyesores &#8230;or rather, opportunities, nearly lost. Those include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-flatiron-building\/\">Flatiron Building<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-station-55\/\">Station 55<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-hoyt-potter-house\/\">Hoyt-Potter House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-lehigh-valley-rr-station\/\">Lehigh Valley Railroad Station<\/a> (Dinosaur Bar-B-Que), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-parazin-building\/\">Parazin Building<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-partners-building\/\">Partners Building<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/03\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-powers-building\/\">Powers Building<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight the Preservation Board and Planning Commission will hear public comments and decide whether or not 13 Cataract will join the ranks of the reborn, or go the way of Rochester&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2010\/01\/rochesters_7th_most_beautiful_demolished_train_station_in_the_country\/\">Bragdon Station<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Cataract Brewing Company Building<br \/>\n13 Cataract Street<\/h4>\n<p>Adam C. Wagner, often referred to as A. C. Wagner, was the architect and designer of more than 50 American breweries during his lifetime. Most significantly for the Rochester community, in 1890 he designed this impressive brewhouse for the Standard Brewing Company. Eventually the building would be named after one of only five Rochester breweries to survive Prohibition\u2014the now defunct Cataract Brewing Company. <\/p>\n<p>At the time of this writing we know of only two other A.C. Wagner brewhouses still standing\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.workshopoftheworld.com\/kensington\/weisbrod.html\" target=\"_new\">Weisbrod &#038; Hess Brewery <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> in Philadelphia and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Steigmier_Brewery_PA.jpg\" target=\"_new\">Steigmaier Brewery <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Cataract Brewhouse represents one of the last remaining pre-prohibition era brewing facilities in Rochester.
