From Eyesore to Opportunity: a snapshot of adaptive reuse in Rochester N.Y.\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAll the controversy over whether or not to demolish the 120 year-old brewhouse at <a href=\"https:\/\/rochestersubway.com\/savecataract\/\" target=\"_new\">13 Cataract Street <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> got us thinking. Those in favor of demolishing the building say it&#8217;s an eyesore and a haven for drug dealers; even prostitutes. So, just remove the building and our problems go away.<\/p>\n<p>Right?<\/p>\n<p>But if we demolished every eyesore in Rochester, would we have solved all the City&#8217;s problems? Or might we end up tossing the proverbial &#8220;baby&#8221; out with the bath water? For the next two weeks we&#8217;ll take a look at some local eyesores &#8230;or rather, opportunities, nearly lost.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Station 55<br \/>\n55 Railroad Street<\/h4>\n<p>By the time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costanzaenterprises.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Costanza Enterprises <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> remade this burnt-out structure into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.station-55.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Station 55 <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" heigth=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> in 2008\/2009, it had already lived many lives. Best known as the home and headquarters of Noah\u2019s Ark Warehouse and later a factory for assembling office furniture and equipment, the building had stood vacant since 2001. $3.5 Million in private investment turned this hopeless eyesore near the Public Market into very popular Soho-style loft apartments and 14,000 sq. ft. of buzzing market space.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the &#8220;eyesore&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\n<a title=\"Station 55 on Railroad Street, Rochester N.Y.\" rel=\"lightbox-eyesoreStation55\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/eyesore-to-opportunity-station55-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom:6px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/eyesore-to-opportunity-station55-1.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Station 55 on Railroad Street, Rochester N.Y.\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is the &#8220;opportunity&#8221; we nearly lost&#8230;<br \/>\n<a title=\"Station 55 on Railroad Street, Rochester N.Y.\" rel=\"lightbox-eyesoreStation55\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/eyesore-to-opportunity-station55-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom:6px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/photos\/eyesore-to-opportunity-station55-2.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Station 55 on Railroad Street, Rochester N.Y.\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Christene at Constanza Enterprises for the information and &#8220;before&#8221; photo.
