Then there&#8217;s Bill Schmidt. When Bill purchased his home on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Lake+View+Park+%26+Pierpont+St,+Rochester,+NY+14613\/@43.1833567,-77.6366427,18z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89d6b4114f225ea5:0xd48b7adba7fbf4a0\" target=\"_new\">Lake View Park <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> this summer, he became the lucky owner of an old bell tower from the long-demolished School #7 in northwest Rochester&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a title=\"Bill's house is a SUPER cool 1911 Victorian with lots of history and nearly all of its charming details and features still intact. It&#8217;s got quite a history too. At one time the home was owned by Fred Tobin, president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/local\/rocroots\/2015\/04\/10\/whatever-happened-tobin-packing-co\/25528783\/\" target=\"_new\">Rochester Packing Company <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>; one of the largest meat processors in the world at the time and innovator of the famed White Hot. Sadly, Tobin&#8217;s son, Donald C. Tobin committed suicide at the age of 23 by leaping from the south rail of the Driving Park Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"One of the big selling points of the house was hiding beneath the overgrowth here in the back yard. But Bill&#8217;s biggest project is hiding here beneath the overgrowth in the back yard.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"In 1968, School #7 was demolished. The homeowner at the time, John Halter, asked the owner of Atlas Wrecking if they would move the bell tower to his back yard. [IMAGE: Provided by Bill Schmidt]\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn 1968, School #7 (located around the corner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/219+Pierpont+St,+Rochester,+NY+14613\/@43.1835349,-77.6370241,339m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x89d6b41128e9cb57:0xb2f1fb0ff07a144d\" target=\"_new\">219 Pierpont Street <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>) was demolished. The homeowner at the time, John Halter, saw the school&#8217;s bell cupola sitting on the school grounds and asked the owner of Atlas Wrecking if they would move it to his back yard. They did, and Halter made good use of it for years as a gazebo.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bill says he would like to restore it but acknowledges he will need the help of a few professionals. This bell tower is 113 years old and is still sitting in a backyard on Lake View Park where it was rigged into place in 1968.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bill says he would like to restore it but acknowledges he will need the help of a few professionals. &#8220;I have Wegman Hardwoods willing to help with the wood work,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I also have an offer from Spring Sheet Metal to bring in a crane to move it for me.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bill would like to have it placed in the street out front of his house so the public can enjoy it. When it was still active, the bell was rung by &#8220;model students&#8221; of the school at the start and end of each school day. <\/p>\n<p><a title=\"As Bill gets into the project he promises to keep RocSubway updated so we all can follow along with the progress. Right now he&#8217;s preoccupied with the painting of his house.
