I&#8217;ve never given it much thought. I just figured Daniel Powers liked his windows <i>really<\/i> clean.<\/p>\n<p>Then, last week while at the Fringe, my RocSubway teammate Joanne Brokaw got introduced to Scott Grove. As it turns out, Scott is that guy hanging high up over Rochester&#8217;s sidewalks\u2014and he&#8217;s not cleaning windows&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QxhSDGvuvgM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxhSDGvuvgM\" target=\"_new\">video <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> above, Scott explains what he&#8217;s doing to the Powers Building, and takes us up in his lift for a closer look.<\/p>\n<p>A little background&#8230; Over his 37 year career as an artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottgrove.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Scott Grove <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> has played in many sandboxes. [PHOTO: RochesterSubway.com]\" width=\"180\" \/><\/a>His use of veneering and other unorthodox techniques add a dimension to his furniture; the type of which you might believe could only be crafted by mother nature over millions of years. In fact he&#8217;s become a nationally recognized innovator in this area, inventing a method of stretching and forming veneer called compound veneering, and authoring a couple of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=tsqBZwEACAAJ&#038;dq=scott+grove+furniture&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=0CDcQ6AEwAWoVChMI9P2GyseYyAIViyQeCh0gIAt6\" target=\"_new\">books <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> on the subject.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meet Scott Grove, a Rochester artist, sculptor, furniture designer, architectural preservationist, among other things. [PHOTO: RochesterSubway.com]\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAs he explains in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxhSDGvuvgM\" target=\"_new\">video <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> Scott fell into the field of architectural restoration 30 years ago when a local architect asked him to reproduce some decorative cornice work for the <a href=\"http:\/\/rocwiki.org\/Piano_Works_Mall\" target=\"_new\">Piano Works Mall <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a> in East Rochester. Since then he&#8217;s worked on many of Rochester&#8217;s most iconic buildings including the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._H._Warner_Building\" target=\"_new\">H.H. Warner Building <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastman_Theatre\" target=\"_new\">Eastman Theater <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonathan_Child_House_%26_Brewster%E2%80%93Burke_House_Historic_District\" target=\"_new\">Jonathan Child&#8217;s House <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@43.1572711,-77.6032317,3a,75y,37.27h,134.26t\/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWm0HqiLsIoqIJadaL8cIQw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656\" target=\"_new\">old old Bausch &#038; Lomb headquarters <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:relative; top:2px;\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/images\/icon_link.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" border=\"0\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meet Scott Grove, a Rochester artist, sculptor, furniture designer, architectural preservationist, among other things. [PHOTO: RochesterSubway.com]\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nToday, you can catch Scott doing some preventative maintenance to the highly ornate, and also quite beautiful, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochestersubway.com\/topics\/2012\/04\/from-eyesore-to-opportunity-rochesters-powers-building\/\">Powers Building<\/a>. He and his partner Mark are checking for signs of corrosion \u2014 replacing loose pieces and parts so none of that beautiful iron work falls on an unsuspecting pedestrian.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meet Scott Grove, a Rochester artist, sculptor, furniture designer, architectural preservationist, among other things.
