  1. Matt says:

Definitely bittersweet to read this. Sounds like life is doing well for you and I hope it continues! Thank you for all you’ve contributed to Rochester and the region. Godspeed good sir!

  2. Renee says:

Bittersweet, indeed. Rochester Subway was my introduction to Rochester when we decided to move here from DC. We were researching the old subway, came across the blog and connected with Mike a few months before we moved here and we were hooked. Mike has inspired so many of us to stick up for this city we love and all the things that make it what it is. I have the privilege of working with Mike on a regular basis through Reconnect Rochester and am inspired by his activism and humility. Keep on keepin’ on, Mike.

  3. Thanks so much. All the best! I look forward to the next Reconnect Rochester event.

  4. Mike Battle says:

Bittersweet news, indeed, but couldn’t be happier for you. All the best with your newest venture. If it’s anything like RocSubway, it’s bound to be a huge success! Thanks for all of your support, Mike.
    Sincerely,
    -Mike

  5. Chris Whittaker says:

    Mike:

While I am sad to hear about the end of the RochesterSubway site, I am glad to see that Reconnect is going strong. I still remember the meetings in the Rundel Library back when y’all were trying to get this off of the ground. Good luck with everything.

    Chris

  6. Chris says:

Good luck. I’ve followed this site from the beginning and always considered it the best Rochester history site. I was shocked when it wasn’t voted the best site a few years ago.

  7. Ian says:

While, I’m happy to hear you’ve found a new way to make a living, I have to say this site is extremely important to the history of Rochester. It contains the stories of the past that unfortunately aren’t taught in schools anymore. It gives Rochestarians a purpose, a legacy to continue.

In that light, I think at this time it would be extremely important for you to make some local contacts with well known and important historians who can take over the main role of content creation for this page. Perhaps through Reconnect, you have those contacts and with that, it would be greatly important. Please do not fall prey to what so many do, which is to notice that they don’t have as much time and are unable to do what they did and let what they’ve done for so many years fall to the wayside until it ultimately disappears. Be inventive just as you were when you had to reinvent yourself after losing your job. Apply what you learned there to this venture and delegate so that this treasure for the community doesn’t disappear. Thousands of children come here for resources for their book reports, college students use it as a resource and starting point, and community leaders often quote the page and recommend it for new Rochestarians to gain a great understanding of their community so that they know where we’ve been and where we’re headed. It lets people know how they fit into this amazing city.

It is my hope that you read this comment and will do what it takes to delegate this work so that the history of Rochester, not the city, but of US as a people, is not left to hang in a place between this and another dimension.

    – Ian.

  8. John Zicari says:

Will miss this site very much. Have learned a lot about a city and region I love. Living away it was a nice connection to my past. Good luck and thank you.

  9. Ryan says:

I just wanted to comment on here in addition to Facebook. I again thank you with all my heart.

But I’ve been thinking about this for the last few months.

Mike, I strongly agree with Ian. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think it will be a tremendous mistake if you archive this website and do not hand it off to someone else. (Or worse: have it deleted and lose all this content).

Frankly, the people of Rochester (and lovers of Rochester history and Upstate history) deserve better. Why not make a contest and have people write in or make a video of why they should be the one taking it over? There are likely tens if not hundreds of people who would gladly take the job.

It’s great that you are now focusing on ReconnectRochester, but this website (Rochester Subway) is a gem to the city and community and you will be making a huge mistake and injustice if you get rid of it. If I moved to Rochester, and didn’t have a website like yours to follow, my experience there would not be an ounce of what it ended up being. Other people deserve that too.

Keep this website around and pass it on to continue its legacy.

    -Ryan G.
