Be Generous with Your Garden

April 11th, 2016

Gloria Gardening [PHOTO: Gloria Grattan]
By Matthew Denker

Imagine there was a way to do just a little extra work, but to make a huge difference doing it. Gloria Grattan, a local eight year old, has imagined just that and is hoping that you and the rest of Rochester can join in and lend a hand by growing just a little extra in your garden this summer (or gardening for the first time, if you don’t already!).

Gloria has been involved in food donation since she was only three years old, and has been working on the west side of town ever since. In an effort to expand the impact of her interests, she is partnering with Refugees Helping Refugeesexternal link in Rochester to grow extra food for those in need. I don’t want to do all the talking for this incredible young woman, so here is a little more in her own words.

Gloria in the Subway [PHOTO: Gloria Grattan]

My name is Gloria Georgia Grattan. I am 8 years old. My school is the Elizabeth Barclay School in Brockport. I like Rochester a lot. I like the museums and the buildings. I like to look at the houses and old, abandoned places. I think that it is important to help people in need, especially children. This summer I am doing a project called “Be Generous with Your Garden”. For the project I am going to be growing fruits and vegetables for people in need. I am also going to be asking other people to help by giving me the extra fruits and vegetables from their gardens and CSA boxes. I am going to grow a garden at my house and at my grandma’s house. I am also going to buy a CSA share to donate. I am working with the group Refugees Helping Refugees and trying to make a garden in the city for me to work with the children in that program on this summer. The fresh food will be distributed to places that serve meals to people in need.

We’re incredibly excited by her project here at Rochester Subway and are hoping to lend a hand personally. If you too want to get involved by giving food, please visit the project’s Facebook pageexternal link and message Gloria. If instead, you would like to donate money towards purchasing additional CSA shares, please visit her youcaring pageexternal link. If everyone can do just a little extra, the effort will multiplicatively benefit our neighbors.

It’s so wonderful what you are doing! Blessings to you. I donated and shared. This really opened my heart to know that children in our community are this wonderful.
