The Final Days of the Fringe

December 25th, 2015

Don't miss the cast of Cabinet of Wonders at the First Niagara Fringe Festival. [PHOTO: Provided]
By Joanne Brokaw

The First Niagara Fringe Festival is winding down, with just tonight and tomorrow left to check out some of the fun. I’ve been blogging daily on my personal blog external link about the festival, so hop over there to see everything I’ve been up to this week. But if you’re hitting the festival for the first time this weekend, here are a few things that you can still catch…

Cabinet of Wonders

Cabinet of Wonders at the First Niagara Fringe Festival. [PHOTO: Provided]
A two-hour variety show filled with physical comedy, dance and acrobatics, all in an intimate setting of the Spiegeltent. Think Cirque quality acrobatics and smart, sassy Vegas-style comedy blended with beautiful music. The Saturday matinee show external link is appropriate for ages 5 and up. You can read more in this Rochester Subway post.

Upside Downton

Luke Kempner creates more than thirty characters in this parody that blends celebrity visitors with well-known characters from “Downton Abbey”. What started as a YouTube video led to Luke Kempner being named “Best Newcomer” in the 2014 BritishTheatre.com Awards. Catch him Friday and Saturday night at the Eastman Theater’s Kilbourn Hall. I’ve got tickets external link to Saturday night’s show and I can’t wait.

The Lady With All The Answers

Sinda Nichols as Ann Landers at the First Niagara Fringe Festival. [PHOTO: Provided]
This one woman show stars Sinda Nichols and is based on the letters of Ann Landers. Written by David Rambo, it’s funny, classy and poignant, and a must see for anyone who ever read the “Dear Ann Landers” column. I saw this on Wednesday night and really enjoyed it. There’s an 11 AM show on Saturday morning external link at the RAPA School of the Arts.

Canary In A Coal Mine

I caught some great improv and sketch shows this week, including Unleashed! Improv, Left For Dead and Thank You Kiss. And while the other comedy shows – Hot Tub: The Musical, Dashboard Dramas and Bushwacked – are still showing, they’re sold out. But as we wind down the festival, you can still catch what promises to be another fun hour of improv when Canary In A Coal Mine external link hits the stage Friday and Saturday nights at 10 PM at MuCCC.

Princess Wendy’s Late Night
Tease Room

This hour of naughty, risque entertainment is more fun than a drunken bachelorette party. Princess Wendy, wine glass firmly in hand, leads a cast of characters that includes a magician, a burlesque dancer, an aerialist and lots of comedy. For mature audiences only. The show starts at 9:30 PM Friday and Saturday external link in the Spiegeltent.

Silent Disco

Tonight and tomorrow, you can disco dance external link the night away in the Spiegelgarden. Only you and your fellow will hear the music though. Dancers will get a pair of headphones where they can switch between two channels of music. No headphones? Too bad for you. You get to watch in silence.

Music on Gibbs Street

Gibbs Street closes again tonight, with lots of great local music – and it’s free! Tonight’s bill includes Talking Under Water, Meg Williams, Mosaic Foundation, Significant Other and Prime Time Funk. Tomorrow, catch the SOTA Show Choir, Rochester Scottish Pipe and Drums, Normal People, Cammy Ehaharo, Violet Mary, Sisters of Murphy, and Tommy Burnett. The music starts at 5 PM on Friday and 3 PM on Saturday.

Let’s be honest: there are dozens more shows happening tonight and tomorrow, and there’s no way I can list them all. Check out the Fringe guide for more details external link. But at the very least, head downtown for some free music and dinner from a food truck in the Spiegelgarden. Experience the magic, before Main and Gibbs turns back into an empty, boring parking lot on Sunday.
