The image above was created by Tristan O’Tierney last October in the Rochester Subway. Tristan attached a common kitchen whisk to some string, put some fine grade steel wool inside the whisk, lit the wool on fire, and then swung the whisk around for a 30 second exposure. The result is perhaps the most beautiful version of spin art we’ve ever seen.
From local development, to just plain news of the weird, here are your RocLinks for this past week…
Free Parking for Everyone!
The City of Rochester is currently conducting a survey on parking downtown After you take the survey (wouldn’t want to bias you!), feel free to read this other article
that points out how massively overbuilt parking is in every American city.
A public meeting on the subject will be held next Wednesday, Jan. 21 (5:30 – 7pm) at the Penthouse at One East Avenue .
Send More Preservation
As you may have heard previously, there is a plan to tear down most of the rather famous Chautauqua Amphitheater (or is it Amphitheatre?) in the name of renovating. Anyway, local architect CJS has stepped in to reimagine the plan, and it will surely involve far less demolition.
Known for Its Education
Black Button Distilling is offering a class on how to distill, as well as the economics of distilling. I don’t want to steal their thunder (classes like this are excellent, and you should go), but for a summary of what you will learn: distilling is pretty straight forward with the right equipment, it costs a ton to get into, and it makes no money.
Since We’re Already Drinking…
If learning to distill isn’t your thing, but throwing back a few colds ones IS, Swiftwater Brewing Company is now open over on Mt. Hope. If you recall, this was the triumph of one nice guy over zoning. So I guess it can be done, if the neighborhood likes you!
On the Road (Again)
And finally, the Rochester Historical Society is moving some of its collection to the Sibley Building after not being able to pay rent to the library over the past few years. Good luck!
As always, use the comments below as open discussion for anything in these links – or let us know if there’s a topic you’d like to see us hit more aggressively in future RocLinks. Have a great weekend!
