You may recall last year when Otto Vondrak told us the story of how the sole survivor of the Rochester subway fleet, Car 60, found its way home to Rochester. Since 1998 the car has been at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum awaiting restoration. To be perfectly honest, most of the volunteers who were involved in its return to Rochester passed on, putting restoration efforts on the back burner. But now, finally, this Sunday the museum will kick off a fundraising (and awareness building) campaign to restore Rochester Subway Car 60 for the public to enjoy once again…
Car 60 will require significant reconstruction to reverse nearly sixty years of deterioration, yet it remains an excellent candidate for restoration. Because of the daunting restoration tasks ahead, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is seeking considerable community support to attempt a cosmetic or possibly fully operational restoration. The public is invited to visit the museum tomorrow for “Subway Sunday” to learn more about Rochester’s transportation history and the future of Rochester Subway Car 60.
Otto Vondrak, with R&GVRRM, says while the task may look overwhelming, there are many components that can be refurbished individually to help the process along. Each bit brings us closer to our goal of saving this significant piece of Rochester’s history. “We have many of the volunteers, tools, skills, and experience needed to see this restoration project through to its successful conclusion, but we can’t do it alone.”
The museum is asking for the help of professional sheet metal workers, woodworkers and carpenters, painters, electricians, historians, writers, artists, photographers. Please also consider making a donation either online , or send check payable and mail to:

Yay! they are finally going to attempt to restore it. Frankly I’m still a little miffed at how long they had 60 on the back burner since it is as far as i am concerned the most important piece of rolling stock they have. It was too long in any situation period but I digress.
I remember them bringing it in in 1998. A piece this important needs to be fully operational. They should try to get RGRTA in on the funding side of this some since 60 is a part of their heritage. Finally
