  1. Barbara says:

What a great contribution to our history ~ excellent research. My grandmother’s wedding was the first performed in Holy Rosary and my other grandmother attended for many decades. We had many happy holidays at her home on the corner of Lexington and Ranier. So glad for its continued preservation and use. ~~~ thank you!

  2. Dan Glading says:

Very nice writeup on the creative reuse of a community resource. Just for the record, every project has an architect. =) In this case, the architect was SWBR, a local firm that dedicated over four years to working with Providence Housing to guide this restoration and adaptive reuse project through the various design, regulatory, and community approvals needed to ensure it’s success. (Full disclosure: I work for SWBR Architects. Although I did not have a role on this particular project, I am very proud of our efforts as a part of the team that helped to breathe new life into this amazing site.)

  3. Amy Kotlarz says:

Great job on this blog, Michael! Providence’s project has given new life to these historic buildings and helped to fill in vacant lots in the surrounding neighborhood.

Additionally, Mary’s Place, a refugee ministry located in the former Holy Rosary Church, every day welcomes dozens of refugees to its doors to help them get better acclimated to the Rochester area. Many of these refugees live in Rochester neighborhoods that are in transition, and their presence can help stabilize the neighborhoods in which they live.

Mary’s Place is always looking for donations of clothing, food and household items and volunteers to teach the refugees English and life skills.

  4. jimmy says:

The unfair government taxation against the parents who decide to send their children to private schools has greatly accelerated what is now known as “white flight”. If the parents of the children attending Catholic schools weren’t destroyed by unfair taxes, one must imagine the city of Rochester would be better off today and have a greater High School-aged population.

  5. jimmy says:

Also, Thanks Michael Puma for this article. It would be tragic if the old-school pragmatic (and therefore successful) approach to high school education in Rochester is forgotten.

  6. @Dan, thank you for the shout out to SWBR. Mike Puma contacted me to ask that SWBR Architects be added to the article, and he apologized for the oversight.

  7. Cathy Martin says:

Interesting piece. Thank you for recognizing the efforts of architect John T. Comes. It’s wonderful that he’s remembered, and I cheer to see his work re-purposed instead of demolished. Good for you, Rochester!

  8. Matthew Denker says:

This article really made my day. Thank you, Michael, for writing it, and Mike for carrying it. Truly a success for SWBR, Providence, and the community as a whole.

  9. Bill Schmidt says:

I have pictures of the fire posted in the Facebook group (I went to Holy Rosary School) I always welcome anyone who went to Holy Rosary School to join the group.

  10. So glad to see this historic Church brought back to life. It was a beautiful Church and it was sad to see it sit idle for so long.

Also impressed to see the history of the Church and community presented in such a positive light.

  11. Sue E Bissell says:

My grandparents were married in this church in 1911. My mother and her siblings attended Holy Rosary, and my mother and father married in this church in 1943. A beautiful church that is very special to us.
