University of Rochester’s Lost Swimming Pool Revisited

Earlier this year we took a look at some amazing photos of this abandoned swimming pool on the University of Rochester campus. Within days of those photos being posted here, the university had cleaned up the scene. These new photos got lost in my computer which is why you’re just seeing them now. But I thought it was worth revisiting…

A little music room has been built on part of the pool deck.

I kind of miss the old look. The desk chairs really helped tie the room together.

    SUNY Geneseo also has an abandoned pool that is still full of water and random items floating in it. The softball team has a batting practice net on the old pool deck.

    There was music room on that part of the pool deck earlier, as well – there just didn’t used to be a wall there.

    Just a little bit of tlc and they could probably make this a pool again. I’m not sure why they’d want to but it’s still in excellent condition after all these years

    After the Erie Canal was rerouted south of downtown Rochester, the Rochester Industrial & Rapid Transit Railway (the “subway”) was built in its place as a link between the five different railroads and interurban trolley lines that served the Rochester area. As the industrial landscape of Rochester changed, and highways replaced the railroads, the Rochester subway gradually became a relic of a bygone era. In 1956 the subway was abandoned and much of its route was converted into Interstate 490 — built to connect Rochester with the New York State Thruway (I-90).
