  1. Matt says:

I love these conceptual drawings! Lets keep pushing the envelope, architecturally speaking, in Rochester, especially in our downtown core. Having said that, the continued negative response to Erie Harbor is a cautionary tale of how many in Rochester still prefer cookie-cutter architecture to “different” design. Thanks, Mike and Matt.

  2. Or, the reaction to Erie Harbor may indicate that Rochesterians haven’t been exposed to enough variety. I don’t know. But if you’re building on an empty lot, and not tearing down a classic piece of architecture to do it, I say push it to the limit.

  3. Kevin Yost says:

How about a real version of the shelved Taitlin’s Tower that was to be in St. Peterburg, Russia on this site on the former Midtown Plaza site, or maybe just a small sculpture looking like such on the park/greenspace that is supposed to be on another part of the former Midtown site.

  4. jimmy says:

Hey Matthew D. , Do you know about Urbantoronto.ca? It is pretty crazy the number of large scale and smaller scale projects going on across the lake!

  5. @Jimmy, Fashion House is a great example of how old and new can compliment each other.

And you’re right, there are a ton of cool projects going on in Toronto right now. The “twisting” skyscrapers of Absolute World are my favorites (although they’ve been around for a few years now and in Mississauga, not really Toronto)… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_World

  6. Matthew Denker says:

@Jimmy – Yes, Toronto has some of the most exciting as well as some of the most bland towers under construction all at once. I must admit that it’s just easier to follow construction here in NYC since I can see it out my office window (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7799907@N05/9249485284/).

Even Buffalo has a wide variety of projects under way. It would be nice to see more of that in Rochester. Anyone here interested in crowd sourcing projects? Crowd sourcing real estate seems to be a little challenging legally speaking (just ask fundrise – what a company!), but I think if you were to do it under the more classic methodology if just collecting money from your buddies and investing you could skirt all that.

Anyone here want to be friends?

  7. Matthew Denker says:

Speaking of things being built in Toronto (thanks jimmy!), this is daring, if not my style: http://www.urbantoronto.ca/news/2013/07/touring-cityzen-and-fernbrooks-waterlink-pier-27-part-1

  8. Christopher Brandt says:

I’m on board with this. We need something a little bit crazy. Bring back the days when James Johnson was doing precedent breaking designs like the Liberty Pole, Mushroom House, and Temple Sinai. Even something like 1 East Avenue would be great.

  9. jimmy says:

Ya Toronto is craziness. And Mississauga is now like a legit city. Rochester needs to take advantage of the close proximity to the millions of people living in the Golden Horseshoe. A ferry would be nice. 🙂

  10. Adrian says:

    I like it.

And people talk about the “negative response” to Erie Harbor but that response is basically just a bunch of people whining. It costs nothing to whine. The response that matters is that the apartments are all full of people paying thousands of dollars per month to live there.

  11. ACW says:

I like it a lot! But this would be a very innovative design in NYC or London–in Rochester it would be the architectural equivalent of putting a man on the moon.

  12. Zakery Steele says:

Re: Erie Harbor… the former River Park Commons won an AIA (American Institute of Architects) award in 1979. How insane is that? What we are giving design awards to today may just be the atrocities we are tearing down tomorrow.

  13. chase tyler says:

The rendering looked unstable. Would the actual building have support beams or cables? Or would the cubes actually hold?

  14. Ryan says:

Although this is about parcel number six, I’m really interested in what is planned for parcel number two next to midtown tower and directly north of Xerox tower. Anyone have any information about that? It literally is the center of Rochester’s modest tower district.

  15. Kevin Yost says:

One thing I would like to see downtown, or at the Medley Center site or in Henrietta as backups, would be the re-formed National Soccer Hall of Fame and museum by U.S. Soccer that are being urged by myself, Mr. Charles Sciano, Sr. and Mr. Al Schneider. Perhaps, this could go on that site on Midtown and be with an also-re-formed Int’l Women’s Sports Center and Hall of Fame by the Women’s Sports Foundation and be architechturally significant and not fail like their predecessors in Oneonta and Manhattan did, respectively. The rest of what was in the Sports Museum of America in Manhattan could go in The Strong Museum’s proposed North American Museum of Sport and Culture in Buffalo and also be architechturally significant. There could also be a new, better Sahlen’s Stadium on the Midtown site, with access to better underground and surrounding parking, without taxpayer funding, while the current Sahlen’s Stadium could be retrofitted into a softball stadium for a new local franchise of the National Pro Fastpitch women’s pro softball league, also without taxpayer money.
