ROC Transit Day: Lose your car keys on June 20

ROC Transit Day is coming. Lose your car keys on June 20, 2013.
A year and half ago I managed to convince RGRTA to try something new. I said, “let me give away free bus rides for one day.” I imagined most people would say “no thanks, the bus isn’t for me.” But I also knew my mom was right when she said, “try it, you might like it.” That year I think maybe 200 people participated and left their cars at home for the day.

What began as a fun little experiment, has turned into ROC Transit Day external link – a full blown Rochester holiday from our cars. This year ROC Transit Day will be on Thursday, June 20.

In this, its second year, the volunteers at Reconnect Rochester are giving away 1,000 special edition RTS fare cards – designed by yours truly. And we’re asking Rochester’s business community to get involved too…

ROC Transit Day is coming. Lose your car keys on June 20, 2013.
On ROC Transit Day, having an RTS fare card will be like having your very own key to the city. Because in addition to being able to move around town with RTS, all transit riders will be able to take advantage of exclusive deals and offers from businesses all around Rochester. These special deals will be posted on our interactive map external link. Find one you like, and show them any RTS fare card on June 20 to get the deal.

ROC Transit Day is coming. Lose your car keys on June 20, 2013.
For this to work we need Rochester’s business community to get involved.

If you’re an employer or an organization of any kind…

Please email me ([email protected]) and ask me to send you a stack of FREE fare cards for your employees or staff to use on June 20.

If you’re a retail business…

Please consider offering some kind of deal to your customers (if they show you a transit fare card) on June 20. Offer anything—a freebie, a dollar off, buy-one-get-one, etc.) and we will promote the heck out of your business. THIS IS FREE ADVERTISING FOR YOUR BUSINESS!

All participating businesses will be displayed on our interactive map external link and will be mentioned repeatedly in our marketing communications and linked to from our event website. Email me directly ([email protected]) if you’d like to participate.

[ Joe Bean Coffee Roasters external link, A Step Apart external link, Chartreuse Studios external link, and Small World Food external link have already signed up to participate. Thanks! ]

If you’re not a business owner, and you’d like to help, please share this article with your friends and family, and with your employer. Ask them to participate too. I want to fill this map external link with local businesses, and show the world that Rochester is on the move.

Remember, leave your car at home on June 20th.

  1. Renee says:

We’re on board (no pun intended) for helping promote! Let us know what we can do.

  2. Matthew Denker says:

I’m so very sorry I won’t be in Rochester for this. If it’s any consolation, I’ll take an extra ride on a bus here in NYC in solidarity with the effort (riding the subway doesn’t seem like it should count!). Best of luck with the effort. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.

  3. Actually Matt, the subway does count! And you don’t have to be in Rochester to celebrate. Thursday, June 20 also happens to be “National Dump the Pump Day.”

Seriously. All the more reason to leave the car at home. Although, as a New Yorker, I bet you don’t even have a car, do you?

  4. @Renee, thank you!

We do also need help promoting ROC Transit Day. If you’ve got a blog (and I know you do) or you’re on the Facebook or Twitter, help us spread the word by sharing our posts and tweets.

  5. Matthew Denker says:

@Mike – Way to catch me with my pants down. The wife and I haven’t owned a car in almost 6 years. I’ve gotten some hefty doses of walking around Rochester in that time.

  6. You must have participated in the No Pants Subway Ride then?

How much fun would THAT be on ROC Transit Day?!

  7. Matthew Denker says:

    Sounds cold in Rochester. Zing!

  8. Apwoz says:

I may try a carpool this day but public transit just won’t work for me. Maybe if I could get some work on the bus but my job is very location based. :/. My last job taking the bus was a daily thing and it worked really well for me. Not so much anymore.

  9. zqpmxwon says:

Awesome! I started combining the bus with riding my bike to work and it’s worked out really well. Maybe I’ll try going someplace new and different on the bus in honor of the big day!

  10. Mary says:

Unfortunately, our antiquated bus system makes it impossible for me to get to my office (3 miles straight down one main street) unless I walk three blocks, stand at a bus stop, be driven downtown (where I don’t work), be dumped at a downtown corner where I have to wait 15 minutes for another bus, be driven through some of the worst neighborhoods in the city, then dumped half a mile from my office.

    Thanks, but no thanks.

  11. @Mary, you don’t have to take it to work. Take it somewhere else. Use the interactive map to find someplace to use your fare card for a great deal.

Or, help us out and get your company involved. You may have co-workers who can easily take a trip.

The point is to take one ride. We have to make an effort sometimes to make a statement. You know what I mean?

  12. Mary says:

Yes, but it is a Thursday. I’ll be at work all day, then chores at home in the evening.

    Good luck with it, though.

  13. mateo says:

Where can I get myself one, PErsonally if my organization isn’t participating?

  14. Mateo, let me know what town or neighborhood you’re in and I’ll see if there’s neighborhood organization near you.

  15. You could also ask your employer to sign up. Just have them contact us.

  16. mateo says:

I live near Park ave/Monroe ave. Unfortunately, I highly doubt my employer would participate.

  17. @Mateo, who’s your employer?

  18. mateo says:

    Sinbads on park ave

  19. Oh, yup. We spoke to them weeks ago. If you email me your mailing address I will send you a fare card.
