13 Storefronts

March 13th, 2013

13 Storefronts
I’ve given myself a photo assignment for 2013. Pick 13 subjects, and take 13 snapshots of each. Simple. We started last month with 13 mailboxes. This month I turned my lens on what I thought were some of Rochester’s most intriguing storefronts. These images were taken on the city’s east side, from Monroe Ave up to East Ridge Road…

  1. Zack says:

Sorry mike, that first one is at the corner of South Ave. and Comfort St., not Union.

  2. Nate says:

Zack is correct: first one is definitely the South Wedge, good old Comfort Street.

  3. Kwandell Peterson says:

Google says Mighty Moe’s is at 844 N Clinton.

  4. ELF says:

I like that part of East Main. It’s very urban and full of small businesses.

  5. claire kaler says:

Love your site. Have to ask-what was your criteria for choosing these storefronts? Certainly an interesting assortment!

  6. Yes! That first is South Ave. Sorry for the mix up. I swapped out the photo at the last minute and forgot to update the caption.

The criteria are fairly loose. I simply go out and shoot as many examples as I can. In this case I came away with 40-50 storefronts after 3-4 hours. Then I try to select the ones I that seem to have the most character or something unique about them that sets them apart. That’s tricky. There were many that I really liked but just didn’t make the cut. Maybe the quality of the shot wasn’t to my liking… or maybe they were too similar to one of the others. For example, Juan & Maria’s Empanada Stop got dropped only because Zimmermann’s Hots is a similar type of establishment, and Zimmermann’s also happened to have the four little girls eating out front which thought was cute.

Anyway, the more I got into this particular subject the more I realized “storefronts” could have gone in a number of different directions. I might decide to do another series of eateries… liquor stores… mini-marts… abandoned store fronts, etc.

For now, I’d consider these to be sort of “a study” rather than a finished thought. But that’s part of the fun. I’ll take a step back after doing 13 of these studies and then decide if there’s something cool here. I dunno yet. Maybe a coffee table book is in order?

  7. @Kwandell, I found Mighty Moe’s… it’s actually at 562 Portland.

  8. chase tyler says:

Here are ideas. Streetlights, people having a good day, sunsets, sunrises, statues, benches, odd looking cars, houses in poor repair, historical sites in good condition, apartment buildings, buses, and churches (not recently built ones, old ones). If you drop 1 of these, your year is set.

  9. Good ideas Chase. Thanks!

  10. Joe says:

The section at Main and Clinton is just sad, maybe now that they are out from under the shadow of that horrendous RenSquare plan, the buildings can see some TLC. Would be a nice compliment to the money being poured into Sibley’s and Midtown. And by compliment, I mean necessary to the area.

  11. chase tyler says:

There are some nice storefronts on Dewey Avenue in. Drive anywhere up and down it, there will be a store. Especially near the new Walmart in Greece. I pass those everyday.

  12. Vicki Robinson says:

How about the Donuts Delite where Culver Road meets Clifford/Empire in Irondequoit? We almost lost it, but the Salvatore’s Pizza folks have turned it into one of their restaurants and have kept the mid-century modern exterior. They sell donuts too!
