B. Forman Co.

December 5th, 2012

For the past few days we’ve been doing some holiday window shopping at the old Sibley’s and McCurdy’s department stores. “But, WAIT! What about B. Forman’s?…” you say? Well, I searched around a bit, and though I wasn’t able to find many photos of window displays from B. Forman Co., fear not… I’ve got something you might like. Newspaper ads from December 18 – December 25, 1929! Don’t say I never gave you anything…

About B Forman Co.
Department Store…

On the far left, across East Main St., is the Sibley, Lindsay and Curr store. 1947. [PHOTO: Rochester Municipal Archives]
B. Formans’s was incorporated in 1912 and operated a store at 46 Clinton Avenue. The founder’s son, Maurice Forman, later took over the business, expanded it and attracted fame by co-developing the Midtown Plaza with Gilbert McCurdy and moving the store into the plaza. McCurdy’s and Forman’s both closed in 1994.

  1. yugo42 says:

Actually, Midtown was built around and incorporated the existing Forman store building pictured above…

  2. Jason Haremza says:

    B. Forman’s logo is as elegant now as it was then.

  3. Bob Williams says:

Tearing down B. Forman was the biggest mistake of all in the Midtown Redevelopment. It was the last of Clinton Avenue retail, with an entryway that dignified the individual instead of confounding them. Cortland Street, mentioned in the ads, is coming back, might have been nice to have something retail ready on it!

  4. Dennis Cass says:

My understanding is that display windows went through a more minimalist period from the ’60s through the mid ’70s,at which time there was a revival of the elaborately themed windows. Had several friends who worked in display at both Sibley’s and B. Foreman circa 1978-81,and every week each team tried to outdo the other. Hope some photos from that period can be located – some of the windows were spectacular and quite witty.

  5. Kathy Dwyer says:

    Good Afternoon!
I am interested in selling a pair of DISPLAY FIGURES (man & woman) from the B Forman / McCurdys department store circa 1920s-1940s…. They would have been used for the FORMAN STOCKINGS and Shoes….
I have shoes and a B. Forman box…..all to scale..
Who would I contact that would be interested? The historical society?

  6. Ginger Sorensen says:

Hi-I’m wondering if you have any of these B Forman ads available to sell? I’m also interested in any boxes or any merchandise from the store circa 1920-1930!

    Thank you!
