Susan B. Anthony Asks for Your Help to Save Church

November 1st, 2012

Susan B. Anthony wants you. She's asking for volunteers to gather support to save a neighborhood landmark.
About a month ago, someone set up a petition external link in opposition to a plan to demolish 660 West Main Street (formerly Westminster Presbyterian Church) and to prevent the building of a Dollar General in its place. The owner of the petition is using “Susan B. Anthony” as an alias. And this week “Susan B. Anthony” sent me a plea for help via email…

Former Westminster Presbyterian Church, 660 West Main Street, Rochester NY.
She is looking for volunteers to go door to door in the Susan B. Anthony, Bulls Head and Changing of the Scenes neighborhoods to collect signatures and letters of support from the community in an effort to save the church. She will also need volunteers at the public market on Saturday to do the same.

If you’d like to help, you are asked to contact them at [email protected] with your name, phone number, and weekend availability.

A Zoning Board public hearing has been set for November 29th to determine the fate of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Susan B. Anthony says, “We need to put feet on the ground fast to save this Rochester landmark.”

  1. Philip says:

This the same Susan B. Anthony that is bizarrely against a woman’s right to choose?

  2. @Philip, not to jump to the defense of a dead suffragette, but I don’t think anyone could possibly know what Anthony’s views on abortion would be today. Not only were societal norms much different in the 1800’s, so was the practice of medicine.

Besides, does one’s views on abortion or some other issue negate all her achievements no matter how positive they may be?

BTW, don’t forget to VOTE! I don’t care which “side of the aisle” you’re on. Tuesday is fast approaching. Make plans now!

  3. Philip says:

Oh I love Suzie B. She is one of my biggest heroes. That’s why it makes me sick that her name is dragged through the mud by an anti-choice group when I think it’s safe to say a modern Susan B. Anthony would never have the same opinion. (sorry to be so off-topic in the comments, love the blog)

    Vote every November!

  4. Not off-topic at all. It’s all local history and very timely/relevant. Thanks for contributing. I’d be interested to hear what others think about the Susan B. Anthony anti-abortion debate as well.

  5. ELF says:

Who cares? Most of the Founding Fathers were slaveowners but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do a lot of good for our country. Historical figures are not infallible.

  6. You’ve got a point.

  7. Philip says:

Yes, that’s my point. Thomas Jefferson wouldn’t be a racist today and Susan B. wouldn’t be an anti-choicer.

  8. Linda says:

Thank you for the great historical articles and news! It is hard to say what these historical figures would think today. The Progressive Eugenics movement in the early 20th century came about in order to rid America of the dependent, defective and delinquent population. This is when “birth control” was introduced. Susan B. Anthony was an amazing woman! If anyone is interested in reading an article about her or about Eugenics, please visit my blog: http://inmatesofwillard.com/2012/10/19/1860-susan-b-anthony/

    Thank you.

  9. UPDATE: You can speak out against the demolition of the church at 660 W. Main St. tomorrow at City Hall.

The Zoning Board Public Hearing begins at 9:30am. But the church demolition / Dollar General case could begin anytime between 10:30 and 11:30. Be smart and arrive as early as possible.

    See you there.

  10. 644 W. Main St. says:

Mr. Maye – I heard through the grapevine that you’d like to turn my house into a Tim Horton’s! Thats hilarious! Cause I thought you said you couldn’t afford my house. Tell you what – you can turn my house into a Tim Horton’s for $750,000.00

  11. 644 W. Main St. is that true?

  12. 644 W. Main St. says:

Is which part true? It’s a rumor. I wasn’t there when it was said cause that would have been the honorable way to discuss it.

  13. 644 W. Main St. says:

I heard it on 2 separate occasions…get my email from dawn.

  14. The part about Maye saying he wanted to turn your house into a Tim Horton’s. That’s absolutely disgusting. A remark like that, even made in jest, show’s a complete lack of respect for his neighbors.

  15. 644 W. Main St. says:

When Marvin first told me of his plans I flipped out and asked him of he was going to buy my house. He told me that he would love to have my house for an office bit he didn’t think he could afford it. I threw that out into me letters to the city saying that I doubted his ability to build and maintain his property if he could not afford my house. I think it’s been his plan all along to try to get it. At this point, I feel (and I could be wrong) that he is hoping that my situation becomes annoying enough that he can get my property cheap. It’s beyond a strip mall – this guy wants his own little west main St empire. He has got to be stopped. He doesn’t live here and doesn’t care.
