A “2nd Chance” for Community Gardens Near the Public Market

April 21st, 2012

This community garden near Rochester's Public Market was started by Brian Pettit and his partner Eugene. It has been dubbed '2nd Chance Central Park' because of its location, its rejuvenating impact on the neighborhood, as well as the recycled materials in use.
Community supported urban agriculture is an idea that’s been taking root external link in neighborhoods across Rochester for several years now. Brian Pettit and his partner Eugene are disabled veterans who have been working to convert empty lots near Rochester’s public market into community gardens. They dubbed their first garden lot “2nd Chance Central Park” because of its location (2nd Street & Central Park), its rejuvenating impact on the neighborhood, as well as the recycled materials in use.

This “2nd Chance” garden had been producing heirloom tomatoes, peppers and potatoes since 2009 until it was accidentally bulldozed by the City last Spring. And suddenly the name has taken on a whole new meaning…

This 2nd Chance garden was accidentally bulldozed by the City last Spring when workers mistook his trademark 'tire tater' planters for an illegal dumping site. Suddenly the name has taken on a whole new meaning.
Brian had a permit for gardening on the lot, but he says City workers mistook his empty tire planters (used for potatoes) as an unauthorized dump site. Not bothering to cross-check their work order, the workers unknowingly scooped away two years worth of compost chock full of Brian’s heirloom seeds. Hoses, tools, fencing, tires, tarps, and all sorts of innovative little pieces and parts of the previous years garden… were all gone.

Brian and Eugene have already begun to rebuild 2nd Chance garden. And the City gave them a second empty lot across the street. But they need your help to bring these gardens to life.As Brian explains in his blog external link, he didn’t get angry. He just asked if he could start over. Brian and Eugene have already begun to rebuild 2nd Chance garden. And, as sort of an apology for wrecking it, the City offered them a second double lot across the street. So this year they’re looking for some extra hands to bring both of these urban spaces to life.

“I have four full 75-variety heirloom seed kits and a whole good start on compost, as well as permacultured soil to transplant.” Brian says he would love to be able to name this project “Ecopy Rochester” as the first in a series of working camps and community collaboration projects to encourage neighbors to become more interconnected with each other and create a more self-sustaining neighborhood.

If you’d like to help out…

Brian is organizing a Growing Season Kick-off event external link on Sunday, April 29 at 9:00am. Anyone willing to get their hands dirty is invited to meet up on the grassy lot at 259 Central Park. See the map below, and please share the event on Facebook external link.

Items Needed…

Brian and Eugene have plenty of gardening and building tools, but they could use help gathering other materials used for starting seeds, water collection and garden hardscaping. If you have any of the following stuff, please bring it with you on April 30 external link:

  1. Paper towel tubes
  2. Discarded tires (any size)
  3. Corrugated cardboard (cheapest, most eco-friendly weedblock on the planet)
  4. Newspapers (for weedblock & earthworm bedding)
  5. Old tarps
  6. Garden hoses and seeper hoses
  7. Stockade or picket fencing (for compost pit)
  8. Large pieces of fabric (for ‘sprucing up’ appearances of junk tires as planters)
  9. Latex paint (any color)
  10. 55 gal. plastic drums (non-toxic, food storage type)
  11. Gutter and downspout parts

  1. Brian says:

Hope to see people at the PROPOSED new site (I don’t want to presume what the decision from the city will be), it will be the amount of turn-out that ultimately determines the success, and there are plenty of other alternative sites, the goal is to get people accustomed and actively involved in the current community garden processes that are afforded to us all as citizens of this “Flour/Flower City”, and form new community collaboration efforts on a variety of fronts.

  2. Beverly Chetney says:

I will be keeping close tabs on your wonderful project, and pray that God will bless it.
Sounds like this summer will be bringing a bit more aches and pains, but just maybe the calvary will come in with strong arms, bearing rakes, shovels, hoes ect. to take up the slack. How exciting for you and Gene.

  3. Starr Chetney says:

Wow, I would love to see more of your garden, congrats..from Houston. Love, Starr

  4. Brian says:

A special shout out to anyone who speaks Spanish! There are so many people from the immediate community that I would especially like to reach out to because there is a long, strong history of Hispanic community gardening efforts that I would love to be able to “incorporate” into the garden, especially on the corner of 2nd street where I understand a garden ALREADY once stood some time ago. I bought all 5 levels of Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin America like 2 years ago and still haven’t finished level 1

  5. Brian says:

I wish to thank the 4 community garden enthusiasts that showed up at virtually 9am sharp to keep my own enthusiasm up regarding the ‘potential’ for a community garden space at 259 Central Park, and to continue to welcome people to visit, participate, or otherwise enjoy the DEFINITE re-construction of not only the original “2nd Chance Central Park” garden at 296 Central Park but the establishment of a new community resource for exchanging bio-mass for USABLE SOIL for the low-cost creation of community gardens everywhere.

I look forward to receiving community input and ideas for developing and installing labor-saving devices for the collection and processing of organic mass that ‘integrate’ interest and participation in innovation and self-sustaining community environment concepts throughout ALL communities.

P.S. Invention processes sometimes involve danger, if you are law-suit minded, kindly stay away… I really got nothing you want anyway…

    Brian

  6. Marcy says:

Our Daisy Troop (ages 6,7, and 8 year olds) would like to participate. We are working towards our Flower Garden as well as our Earth and Sky Journey badges.

    Sincerely,
    Marcy
