Christine No Like Rochester Subway! ARR!

January 21st, 2010

Christine says she's lived in Rochester all her life. For some reason she's mad as hell and she blames pretty much everyone. (This is not a photo of Christine. Just how I imagine she looks when she's mad.)
Let me just preface this. Those of you who follow RochesterSubway.com know I am not trying to bring back the Subway—although if Mayor Duffy announced its re-opening tomorrow I’d promptly nominate him to be crowned King of Rochester. My mission is plainly stated at the bottom of every page on this site. I support any initiative that will improve the quality of life for all Rochesterians. A bike lane here or there. Perhaps a few good grocery stores downtown, etc. etc. My goal is to get Rochester thinking about the possibilities and to spark public dialogue.

Most of the feedback I get from my readers is very positive and I’ve had a lot of great ideas thrown my way. But for every 20 people I hear from, there’s usually one person who’s… well… a real visionary. This month’s award goes to Christine B. from Rochester. In fact, I may have to name the award after her. Christine makes the assumption that I am out to garnish her paycheck and use it to bring back the Rochester Subway. And oh boy is she P.O.’d!

A word of caution before you read her monologue… if you’re a Kodak employee, a “liberal”, unemployed, gay, or if you are homeless, some of Christine’s ideas may offend you. But if you read between the lines, I’m sure you’ll see where she’s going with this line of thought. Oh, and PLEASE share your opinions in the comments. I know Christine will appreciate your feedback…

Christine may be mad, but she loves her SUV.“I suggest that the old subway terminal be filled in with dirt before some smelly assed homeless dude sues the pants off the city for getting hurt down there. Maybe you can use the piles of rubble from the old Kodak buildings external link to fill it in. This city does not need another whacko liberal project to waste our tax dollars. We do not want your stupid bus station/ theatre. We do not want a fast fairy. And we do not want a subway. It was obsolete in 1954. It’s only more obsolete now. Buy a S.U.V. if you need a ride.”

“The last thing we need is anoter tax exempt museum. Fill it with dirt and be done with it.”

Love,
Christine

So without getting into a knock-down, drag-out brawl with Christine, I politely followed up with her and asked if she had any other ideas or suggestions for improving Rochester? Of course she did…

“Yes, hire more cops. Put the criminals in jail and keep them there. Also, throw the bums out who do not pay their taxes. Stop giving homes to low lifes who have no jobs to pay for them. And, lastly, Shut down Aids Rochester external link. All that organization does is bring us more diseased gay people to support with our limited tax dollars.”

Hey thanks Christine! Okay Rochester, this is what you’re up against.

  1. Let me guess. Probably another of the Tea Party folks. As a liberal her rant doesn’t offend me. She is pissed about something but I’m not sure what it is.

  2. admin says:

To be fair, I should also mention that Christine was responding to an ad we placed on Craigslist asking for people who remember the Subway to share their stories. She is 33 years of age.

  3. Bailey Burritt says:

Oh this is gonna be fun.

Favorite food: Mac and cheese with tater chips baked in.

Favorite show: Glen Beck / American Idol

Favorite book: US weekly (Cause it has U.S. in it)

Favorite movie: Anything with Patrick Swayze or Bruce Willis in it. Oh and Steven Segal to. Man that guy can kick.

  4. Becky says:

Thanks for posting that! It was great for a laugh. More importantly thanks for all the work that you do, Rochester Subway peeps; Rochester is better for it!

  5. admin says:

Thanks Becky! I needed that 🙂
    Great site btw.

  6. I believe that Rochester needs to embrace Project Green, which turns vacant lots and properties from liabilities into assets. That is, it will convert these properties into green spaces, community gardens, parks, green ways and urban forests. This will increase property value decrease crime, and free up tax dollars spent on maintaining the dysfunctional properties (it will improve the quality of life). Rochester plans on converting 40 blighted blocks into green assets in 20 years.
This plan is too little and will take too long of a time. It should be 40 blocks in 10 years, and then 80 blocks in 20 years, in order for it to make a significant change.

Rochester Subway should act as a catalyst to enhance and expedite Project Green. It is a wonderful and inovative project, and I believe Rochester is the largest US city to implement this type of green initiative (something I’m proud of).

    Ck out the plan.

  7. admin says:

Phill, those are exactly the kinds of ideas we’re looking for. Thank you thank you thank you for posting. Are you involved directly with Project Green?

    Christine… any thoughts?

  8. Dan says:

What a mid-day treat. 🙂 She sounds like exactly the type of person who should be bringing ideas to the plate for the city to really turn around. I bet she loves living in the city. OH…WAIT…scratch that, I bet she loves driving the past on 490 in her oversized SUV (which apparently everyone else should get…because they’re well known for the efficiency in everyday use) and never comes into the city. Why bother when there’s an Appleebee’s around the corner?

Phill – love that idea! I hadn’t seen it in the D&C. Looks like a great plan – even better if it can move forward faster!

  9. Admin,

No, I am not part of Project Green, I am just a concerned Rochesterian. Currently, I am a law student at UB. I am interested in this initiative and have recently began to incorporate this idea of right-sizing in my studies.

    Dan,
Here is a link to the only DnC article to date that I am aware of.

  10. Larry K says:

    I love that picture!

  11. Bob says:

Oh hell Mike, just change all the “WE” to “I” in that article.

One of the perks of being too small in the blogosphere is I don’t catch too much of that kind of static.

  12. Bob says:

hahaha, article?!?! I meant DIATRIBE. My bad.

  13. admin says:

Heh heh. Thanks Bob. I’m sure she meant “we” in a proverbial sort of way. I’ll ask her to send the UrbanChamp some hate mail so you don’t feel left out 😉

PLUG: Great post on the Main/Gibbs St. project today!

  14. Tunna says:

Christine is what I refer to as a S.L.U.B. She is part of the Soft, Leathery Under Belly of America. I’m sure she is sporting a kick-ass fem-mullet and as you can see, she’s not too keen on her grammar. I think she was most likely referring to a “fast ferry”, not a “fast fairy”, unless she was referring to Tinkerbell. Who really knows what’s going on in that short-circuited noggin of hers (that sports such a sweet fem-mullet).

  15. Tyler says:

It is my opinion that the city of Rochester needs to rethink the way it functions as a whole, as do many US cities. The western gateway project is a step in the right direction but it really doesn’t solve any of the socio-economic issues that Christine, so tactlessly mentioned. The subway can provide safe, reliable and affordable transportation for larger volumes of people. Highway systems need too much costly maintenance and in the long run WILL sink the local economy. I know Christine is proud of her SUV and possibly even believes her troubles will be over once the rest of the pot-holes on the 490 get filled in this spring but I’m willing to bet that everyone would be in a lot better shape if people like her showed a little more pride in their city.

“Fast, cheap, and good — pick any two.”

    What’ll it be?

  16. admin says:

@Tyler, I agree. It’s a very difficult battle trying to get people to understand the real cost of the immense road infrastructure we’ve built up in this country. It’s just as difficult getting people who have had little exposure to rail transit to understand its benefits. I’m hoping our Streetcar Proposal can help with this.

  17. C.J. says:

    @Phil

Thanks for posting the link to Rochester’s plan. This is good stuff. There’s nothing that makes me prouder than to see my hometown in good form with a strong mindset; I’ll be home soon.
