Inner Loop Redevelopment Recommendations

Wednesday, July 1st, 2015

A recent report from Stantec outlines recommendations and suggestions for the redevelopment of Union Street after the Inner Loop is filled. [IMAGE: Philip Michael Brown Studio / City of Rochester]
By Mike Governale

Yesterday we took a bike ride down inside the Inner Loop with Matthew Ehlers to see how Rochester’s “big fill” was progressing. Quite nicely I’d say. But once filled, the next question becomes, what will fill the void.

RocSubway reader Ben Voellinger pointed us to a recent document external link posted to the City’s website that outlines recommendations for future development(s) along the new Union Street. Thanks Ben! Let’s take a look…

Clearing Rochester’s Sidewalks of Snow is Not a Problem, It’s an Opportunity

Wednesday, March 11th, 2015

When a lot of people are living in a small area, and all of those people own cars, we run out of places to put them. A winter like this one just makes us feel the pain a little more. [PHOTO: Joseph Crescente]
The following is a guest post submitted by Jim Mayer, Rochester NY.
Submit your story today.

Density of people is good for cities. Density of cars is not external link. More people create more demand for local shops and services, which, in return, attract more people. Businesses seeking talent are attracted as well, and the city benefits from increased sales and property tax revenue and by increased utilization of its existing infrastructure. On the other hand when a lot of people are living in a small area, and all of those people own cars, we run out of places to put them. A winter like this one just makes us feel the pain a little more…

Three Heads Brewery & Tasting Room Planned for Neighborhood Of The Arts

Tuesday, January 20th, 2015

FSI Development of Rochester plans to build a brewery and tasting room on the empty lot at 186 Atlantic Ave. for lease to Three Heads Brewing.
By Mike Governale

You may have heard FSI Development of Rochester has purchased the empty lot at 186 Atlantic Ave external link (a.k.a. The Gleason Lot). Here at RocSubway we’ve fantasized about filling in this empty lot for quite some time. And although it’s not our original vision, the actual plan may be even better than how we dreamed it – primarily because it involves a local brew.

FSI is planning to build a brewery and tasting room on the southeast corner of the site to lease to Three Heads Brewery external link of Honeoye Falls. Damn, why didn’t we think of this…

Filling In: Midtown… Parcel 5

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

Let's take a look the City's RFP for Midtown Parcel 5...
By Matthew Denker

As some of you may or may not know, the city recently released a Request For Proposals (RFP) external link for the redevelopment of another piece of the Midtown site. Parcel 5 external link, the site in question, is the very long block from Main St to Elm St and between the Windstream building to the west and 1 East Avenue (Bank of America) to the east. Let’s go back to our trusty Midtown site plan for a visual…

Rochester’s First Parklet

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

Next spring construction will begin on Rochester's first parklet in front of Joe Bean Coffee Roasters. [IMAGE: Staach]
By Mike Governale
Story updated October 12, 2015.

Next spring construction will begin on Rochester’s first parklet—a mini public space—in front of Joe Bean Coffee Roasters external link. Parklets are a relatively new urban feature you may have seen popping up in metros across the country. These makeshift public spaces typically extend out from the sidewalk into adjacent parking spaces offering people a place to stop, to sit, and to rest while taking in the activities of the street…

[UPDATE: Help fund this project on Kickstarter external link]

Transit Authority May Rename Mortimer Street “RTS Way”

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

RTS wants to change the name of Mortimer Street to RTS Way.
By Mike Governale

Next month Rochester’s transportation authority, Regional Transit Service (RTS) will open a new $50 million transit center at Mortimer Street in downtown Rochester. According to a D&C story external link RTS has requested that the City change the name of Mortimer Street to “RTS Way.” Mortimer Street external link has quietly existed between N. Clinton Ave and Saint Paul Street since Rochesterville was incorporated in 1817.

I’ve spent the last five years of my life advocating for Rochester’s public transit system and building a good working relationship with folks at RTS. That’s why I know they will take what I’m about to say as constructive criticism, and nothing more. Here it goes:

Renaming Mortimer Street after yourself is a bad idea. Don’t do it!! Now, let me explain…

Clean Sweep is May 3

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Rochester Clean Sweep 2014 will be May 3. [PHOTO: City Hall Photo Lab]
After a long snowy winter Rochesterians like to get outside and enjoy the milder weather. But when that blanket of snow is finally gone, an ugly layer of trash is often revealed (much of it put there by people like this guy). Don’t stress. Do something about it!

This year, Rochester’s Clean Sweep will be a one-day, city-wide event starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 3 at Frontier Field. In addition to a cleaner neighborhood, you’ll also get a free t-shirt and breakfast, plus get to enjoy a Redwings game, hot dog, AND a drink. Get details after the jump…

It’s Dead

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

Lake Avenue Improvement Project
Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you with the alarming headline, but the traffic-calming project that was proposed for Lake Avenue (at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery) is dead. I received word yesterday from a friend in Charlotte that Mayor Lovely Warren has ordered City engineers to kill the planned lane reduction. Warren caved in to pressure from Charlotte residents & merchants who feared the lane reduction would cause traffic jams and hurt businesses in Charlotte.

In addition to reconstructing the 1 mile section of Lake Avenue, the plan would have reduced the lanes from four to three – with one lane in each direction plus a center turn lane. Why would the City take away traffic lanes?! Relax, you don’t have to worry about it anymore…
