MLK Park née Manhattan Square Park Playground in 1983 [PHOTO: City Hall Photo Lab contemporary collection]
By Matthew Denker

From local development to just plain news of the weird, here are your RocLinks for this past week…

The Big Finale

So Charlotte, huh? The marina’s open, but after 4 years the city has dumped Edgewaterexternal link for well, nothing right now. A new RFP I suppose. Good luck to Charlotte getting the project they’ve always wanted (whatever that is). Maybe they could respond to the RFP when it comes out?

The Wettest Halprin

Great news mid-century, brutalist, landscape architecture buffs! The city is turning the water back onexternal link at MLK Park. I hope it’s still on next time I’m in town so I can see it.

Teeth Cleaning

The Eastman Dental Dispensary has been undergoing renovationsexternal link for the past year or so. Some back of the envelope calculations from the article suggest that Home Leasing spent about $500psf on the apartments, making them easily twice as expensive as anything else in the city. They’re also renting them out at $1.25psf, or a quarter of the expected amount. Sounds like the deal of the century to me, so go seniors!

Onward Mexico

The manager of one of my favorite bars in Rochester, The Revelry, is opening his own barexternal link in NOTA. It will be dedicated to the Mexican Spirit Mezcal. Sounds like another delicious opening to me, and since it’s right in the city, you can easily stumble home from it.

Can I Be Electric too?

And finally, Troy Rank, founder of the Rochester based electric bike company Maxwell Motorbikes, has a thorough interviewexternal link over at the Post. Full disclaimer, I’m married to a cousin of Mr. Rank’s, but came to this link completely on my own. Small world. That said, e-bikes are awesome (another disclaimer – I own one, although not one of Troy’s – sorry if he’s reading this), and I highly recommend them, especially with the parking crunch at the beach.

  1. Ben says:

Would love to see some discussion here about the latest push to make Parcel 5 “open space” for concerts and other events. I’m just not sure why that is a better option over putting some money/time into using MLK Jr park for the same thing and not having a big gaping hole on Main St.

  2. I’ve heard a few small rumblings about this, but nothing definitive. I think it’s a terrible idea (of course I would!). There are plenty of sites in Rochester that could be used for putting on large outdoor events that don’t depend on leaving a huge hole in the middle of downtown. And that’s before you get to really clever spots like on top of any number of the parking garages that are underutilized. If someone came along with a design for a tower on this site that say, doubled the size of the park already through the midtown site, I could see this as worthwhile. To build nothing and just leave a break in the main streetwall would be a travesty.
