Thanks for posting the link to Rochester’s plan. This is good stuff. There’s nothing that makes me prouder than to see my hometown in good form with a strong mindset; I’ll be home soon.

@Tyler, I agree. It's a very difficult battle trying to get people to understand the real cost of the immense road infrastructure we've built up in this country. It's just as difficult getting people who have had little exposure to rail transit to understand its benefits. I'm hoping our Streetcar Proposal can help with this.

It is my opinion that the city of Rochester needs to rethink the way it functions as a whole, as do many US cities. The western gateway project is a step in the right direction but it really doesn’t solve any of the socio-economic issues that Christine, so tactlessly mentioned. The subway can provide safe, reliable and affordable transportation for larger volumes of people. Highway systems need too much costly maintenance and in the long run WILL sink the local economy. I know Christine is proud of her SUV and possibly even believes her troubles will be over once the rest of the pot-holes on the 490 get filled in this spring but I’m willing to bet that everyone would be in a lot better shape if people like her showed a little more pride in their city.

Christine is what I refer to as a S.L.U.B. She is part of the Soft, Leathery Under Belly of America. I’m sure she is sporting a kick-ass fem-mullet and as you can see, she’s not too keen on her grammar. I think she was most likely referring to a “fast ferry”, not a “fast fairy”, unless she was referring to Tinkerbell. Who really knows what’s going on in that short-circuited noggin of hers (that sports such a sweet fem-mullet).

Admin, No, I am not part of Project Green, I am just a concerned Rochesterian. Currently, I am a law student at UB. I am interested in this initiative and have recently began to incorporate this idea of right-sizing in my studies. Dan, Here is a link to the only DnC article to date that I am aware of.

What a mid-day treat. She sounds like exactly the type of person who should be bringing ideas to the plate for the city to really turn around. I bet she loves living in the city. OH…WAIT…scratch that, I bet she loves driving the past on 490 in her oversized SUV (which apparently everyone else should get…because they’re well known for the efficiency in everyday use) and never comes into the city. Why bother when there’s an Appleebee’s around the corner?

Phill – love that idea! I hadn’t seen it in the D&C. Looks like a great plan – even better if it can move forward faster!

I believe that Rochester needs to embrace Project Green, which turns vacant lots and properties from liabilities into assets. That is, it will convert these properties into green spaces, community gardens, parks, green ways and urban forests. This will increase property value decrease crime, and free up tax dollars spent on maintaining the dysfunctional properties (it will improve the quality of life). Rochester plans on converting 40 blighted blocks into green assets in 20 years. This plan is too little and will take too long of a time. It should be 40 blocks in 10 years, and then 80 blocks in 20 years, in order for it to make a significant change. Rochester Subway should act as a catalyst to enhance and expedite Project Green. It is a wonderful and inovative project, and I believe Rochester is the largest US city to implement this type of green initiative (something I'm proud of). Ck out the plan.
