Freedom to Ride.
$1.00 Weekly Subway,
Bus, and Trolley Pass.

This is an original Rochester Subway, Bus, and Trolley pass for the week of February 12, 1949. These weekly passes were first issued on October 27, 1934 but were widely used during WWII. Each week during WWII a new group of young American men and woman arrived in Rochester to fill new jobs at Eastman Kodak Company — with the women increasingly out numbering the men as the war progressed.

This bus pass, measuring 2 ¼" by 3 ¾", insured transportation to and from work and for sight-seeing or other excursions for an entire week on all RTC bus and trolley lines. The cash rate of fare at the time was $1.00 for a “city-only” pass (like this one), or $1.25 for a suburban and city pass, good within all city points plus the suburban point shown in the lower left corner of the pass.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the pass can be found on the right side. Each week a different local event or organization was highlighted accompanied by its identification or a slogan. Organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America, the USO, the YMCA, and YWCA were often featured — as were various wartime slogans and public announcements.
